Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
That ghost disk appears when you run it on a real 128K mac as well. And so does the Key Caps crash. The about box is interesting because it is actually drawn up using quickdraw rather than being a PICT resource. And, to bring up something lost from the old forums, there's a grim reaper icon...
The emulation in minivmac is not perfect and some things work on a real Plus that don't work in the emulator. But this system only works with the 64K rom.
The minimum system for any quadra is 7.
Many of the early system disks include a little app that reports the system version. Alternatively, you can look in the System file with ResEdit - the version is contained in a string resource.
You've included a later version of Finder though, so you lose the most interesting features - the cool about box, and the different folder and mac icons. Try instead taking the "RealFinder" app and changing its name and type/creator to be a proper Finder again. You'll need to use one of the...
I mean it didn't sell anything like what they'd hoped, and was pretty much unusable because of the memory and other limitations. You seem to be claiming it was successful just because it had successful progeny. Not much of a criterion to employ when trying to choose between them.
7.6.1 is horribly slow on an LC II - I'd say unusably slow. An LC III can manage because of the additional memory, but still not a good choice. You can get most of the features from add-ons anyway - I'd recommend using 7.1 as the base. Have a look at TylerEss's website for a couple of...
A Mac II is the only Mac that runs a system earlier than System 6 in colour. Granted it doesn't look very different, but that was the aspect that interested me. Also, it was the first expandable mac, and in many ways merged the Apple II spirit into the Mac line.
I bought mine for $5, but...
Checked what Larry Pina had to say, his solution is "Upgrade to the 128K Roms" :-)
However, he then talks about pin 20, and that is consistent with Tom Lee's paper as well, so I will try disconnecting it and seeing if things get better.
There are heaps of very cheap second hand copies of the Dead Mac Scrolls available in the US - I got mine (perfect condition with disk!) from www.abebooks.com. The other Pina book for early macs is much harder to come by, but I have it too and will look into it to see if I can find where this...
I still kick myself for surrendering the Classic II with FPU that I did my PhD on... :-( System 6.0.8L for Mathematica work to maximise speed and memory, THINK C for coding, and MPW for coding and shell and LaTeX, and a noisy external 105MB SCSI drive for workspace AND backup! :-)
And, I...
There's more to computing than specs - else this place wouldn't exist!
I judge by my assessment of a machine's contribution to the "Macintosh phenomenon" :-)
Plus is therefore my choice.
