Might it be an issue with the ribbion cable connecting the display? If you had a known working display (from another 190* or 5300*) you could swap it on, that might help you determine if it is bad video ram. Any luck with replacing the screen capacitors?

I think I have saved somewhere the backup disk images for the 190/5300/2300. It is System 7.5.2. There should be a disk tools boot disk with it. I could see about posting that if it helps.
