Just got it on Friday after a 3-week wait, and I spent a good part of Friday and Saturday figuring out how to install Kubuntu on it. Mine's the $499 model that's second from the bottom of the line, with a 1.2 ghz Via C7 processor, 120 gb hard drive and (originally) SuSE Enterprise 10.
Totally...
I noticed that warped slot one morning, but it didn't look like anyone had an accident, so I don't know what's up with that. One of these days, I'll just super-glue it back.

Why do you think I take such good care of the company equipment? [:D] ]'> [:D] ]'> [:D] ]'>

Look at what I just installed into the rack at work:

Thanks Bolle, I'll try that next time!
I found a taker for the machine locally, and I think it's in pretty good hands now.
I don't accept payments for shipping because I don't want to run charges through the company's own FedEx account. Even if it's reimbursed, they account for every penny and...
I'd probably use one of the earliest OSes that had Open Transport, for the TCP/IP and DHCP support is provides.
Got a PCMCIA module? Can't use a wifi card without one, and better hope that yours is actually PCMCIA and not CardBus or some other newer standard.

Slow week at the office, so what better time to continue cleaning and prepping older company machines for new homes? There's something satisfying about clearing away grime, pen marks, stickers and other junk away and revealing a surprisingly nice looking machine beneath.
Man, I don't remember...
Anyone experience this? No signs of life whatsoever: No fans spin up, no relay clicking, no noises, no nothing. Nothing obviously blown on the motherboard, no bad smells of burnt electronics. Tried a new battery but that made no diff. Wondering if a fuse in the power supply has failed, but it...
Hard to say: Depends on what you guys are going to use it for, and how much energy it will consume.
If that's Socket 939, I may have a Athlon64/3500 "Winchester" CPU sitting around.
Nice!
I haven't seen one of those in person yet, but in general I've really liked Asus products. I was tempted to buy one for storing my digital photos while traveling, but really need 50+ gigabytes of storage space for that, so I've got an HP Mini-Note on order instead.
Thanks, folks. Battery life isn't so hot right now, because I rebuilt that battery what, 2 years ago? And they must have sold me old stock, because they never took a full charge even then. With a fresh set, I figure 5+ hours, easily.

After much procrastination, I finally got around to replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard, and that seems to have solved all problems--crackling audio, sudden shutdowns, etc. Where possible, I replaced surface-mount types...
