    Fitting a PAL Encoder card

Thank you. I couldn't remember which pin it was which carried the video signal.

    Boxed 128k on ebay

Once upon a time it was worth $2495.00. How many years will it take to surpass its new price? Eventually even Model T Fords became worth more than new.

MIDI performance on a Macintosh Classic, good?

The typical 3-port MIDI adapter (that is 3 MIDI outs on the same 16 channels) is merely a 1 MHz crystal to provide the clock for the Mac's SCC chip to generate 31.25 kilobaud and some DIN jacks. These are limited by MIDI's slow serial rate. There are "32 channel" adapters that use both ports...

    G4/ Ethernet Troubleshooting..

If I recall, in automatic, the Network Control Panel doesn't display what it's actually using. In any case, open the Network Control Panel, click the "Advanced" or "Configure" button depending on what version of OS X you have, select the "Ethernet" tab, select "Manual", then start with the most...

PowerLogix 1.1GHz upgrade only running at 650MHz

If you enable dynamic power management, doesn't that mean the CPU drops to half-speed when possible, as in idling while you look at a CPU speed screen? CPUD and other speed sensing utilities are somewhat suspect because you don't know what they are using for a reference or how they are measuring...

    G4/ Ethernet Troubleshooting..

The power supplies on that model are known to fail, so that may be what died. As for ethernet, sometimes the computer won't autonegotiate a suitable connection with the central hub, depending on what's in your schools' wiring closet. For that, go to the Network control panel, Advanced, Ethernet...

Trouble booting blue & white g3

That does sound like corrupt PRAM, if you wound up in Open Firmware (the mac-boot prompt). Check your battery voltage - should be 3.6V minimum. If the battery is OK, then press the Cuda reset button once, wait 15 seconds and try a reboot. If the HD has been replaced sometime in the machine's...

Snapped the neck of a CRT?

No, the Sharp 9" B&W that Trag is probably referring to dates from 1975.

Installing System 6 & System 7 on the same Mac (SE/30)

To "unbless" a system folder you need to remove either the System file or the Finder. One easy way is to create a folder inside the system folder called "Finder Hide" or some such and drag the Finder into it. Now the System and Finder aren't in the same folder. Restart from your System 6 floppy...

MIDI performance on a Macintosh Classic, good?

Just how little jitter can MIDI deliver? At 31.25 kb/s, or 31 bits/mS, and 3 bytes (30 bits with start & stop bits)/shortest MIDI message, it seems you need at least 1 mS per event. Longer for more complex events. Can any sequencer reach 2 mS jitter? In practical terms, I've played complex...

    604e versus the G3

I asked one of the CPU guys at IBM about that, and he said, yes they did a lot of profiling of MacOS, and common opcodes were given hardware, while seldom used instructions were done in microcode. In other words, the G3 was a 603e tuned for MacOS. The 604 was a mainstream (for IBM) Power...

    IT BURNS!

True, but the highest part of the case contains only the top of the CRT. As I found when designing the Fanny Mac, all you have to do is actively suck the hot stagnant air out of the case, and the works will run much cooler. Obviously from a cooling perspective it would help if the air outlet was...

    Fitting a PAL Encoder card

The PAL card went in slot 7, I believe, since 7 has special video connections. I have not seen a Europlus, but was told there is a single pin connector near slot 7 that the flying lead attached to. If that is not the case, I can go back to my old Apple developer docs and look it up.

    IT BURNS!

Mine seemed awful hot too, so I added a fan at the top of the case blowing air out the handle holes. The fan doesn't fit flush, so the sides of the fan are sealed to the case with clear tape to make an air duct. Keeps it much cooler with the forced airflow, and the fan has blue LEDs. 8-)...

    Kurzweil K150fs - anybody use a ][ for SMP?

A bit of a switch, using the MIDI card as a serial interface. It was common to use a Super Serial card or a //c serial port as a MIDI interface by doing timing in software. I remember one of Hal Chamberlin's demos at the WestCoast Computer Faire where he played a synthesized Bach Toccatta &amp...

    Portable Backlit (not backlit)

The cell used in the portable's battery is here: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=842-1002-ND There are three of them in series. You can cut or break the battery open and replace the cells by soldering wires to the terminals.

Screen Adjust on a Mac Classic?

There are adjusters on the analog board for raster height, width, and H & V position. They are identified by icons & arrows which indicate which way they change the picture. If you enlarge the raster a lot, you may have to tweak the focus just a bit. Somewhere around a half inch of...

    Carputer Idea

If that's all you need, an iPod would do. :p It will be easier to power an iBook than a Mini. Car power adapters for laptops are easy. The weird voltage for a Mini, not so easy, but that doesn't stop people. Several Minis in cars are documented online at 123mini and other places.
