That means your root=/dev/xxx is not pointing to the correct partition. Start with the # at 1 and go up from there. You should eventually hit the right partition. (Or give it the device you selected as root during installation)
Passive matrix used to irritate me to no end, but several days of setting up a 190 for my sister and the accompanying ZIP 100 disk shuffling of files back and forth has gotten me well acclimated to the blurry little beasts.
Which installer did you try? The alternate should get through ok on 40MB.
I would do a netinstall using the mini.iso at http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/powerpc/daily/powerpc/netboot/
With enough RAM (as yours has) the upper end G3 iMacs do pretty well with X. The only downside is the older Gx chipset and their lack of acceleration issues under X. I'm guessing it just needs a fresh paving with 9 or your choice of X

With both 540c's dead until I replace their inverter boards, I'd be using the 190 except for that passive-matrix screen. Maybe I should grab a scrap 5300c somewhere to let the 190 see the rainbow.
