    Please help with iMac G4

eraser, Yes, you can use pretty much any optical drive with parallel ATA to boot that iMac G4. No need for you to mod the drive door mechanisms at all for fitting. CD-ROM only, CD burning only, DVD-ROM, DVD-ROM and CDRW (combo drive) and DVD burning drives (Superdrives) will all work. Some...

Disk Tools floppy that can boot a TAM

"L I B! M R Ducks!" Okay, looking at the pic, doesn't that seem to be the worst place to put a floppy drive, right behind a loudspeaker? 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

    recreating After Dark

My favorite was AD version 4.x. It included a Gary Larsen's "The Far Side" as an option in the settings. One I remember had a hen coop, a chicken looked around to see that the coast was clear, then yelled out, "EGG FIGHT!!!" Next thing you know, all these hens are literally throwing eggs at...

    Please help with iMac G4

Alright, in that case, it's probably just that the drive needs to be partitioned, formatted and the OS of choice installed. If he's getting a grey screen, then later a disk or folder with a blinking question mark, obviously it needs a valid OS installed. OS X for sure and maybe OS 9, but only...

Disk Tools floppy that can boot a TAM

Wait a minute...the TAM has a floppy drive? I thought those only had CD drives. Am I missing something? Sorry to sound like a n00b. 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

    Barcode Scanners

I second CelGen's post, but I would look for bar code scanners made by Symbol, one of the biggest manufacturers of scanners. Here is one made by Unitech, but doesn't appear to have any included software. 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

    Please help with iMac G4

Another thing to keep in mind is that the iMac G4 uses Parallel ATA bus for its internal drives. The drive controller may not have 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing), which allows for partitions to exceed 128 petabytes (128,000,000,000,000,000 bytes). The older standard limited you access...

iMac G4 - ethernet port dead

The only thing I can suggest is to first get access inside to the logic board and inspect the 8p8c jack (RJ45). Is it a through-hole type or surface mount (SMT)? Do the joints appear to be soldered well or are they "cold"? I would check all that out with a continuity tester on a multimeter...

    Extensions Issue

Guys, please, take it easy. We all were n00bs or n00bish at one time in our lives. Give 'em a chance to learn and be patient. For some of us, it takes a while to grasp the concepts. I didn't get where I'm at today by being the ultimate expert 20 years ago. 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

    Extensions Issue

The app is off of a CD included with each copy of Macworld's Mac Secrets 5th Edition by David Pogue and Joseph Schorr. It is free to use for up to 1 week, then you have to register (Shareware). But I did some research and the original authors of the software, Jeff Robbin & Bill Kincaid...

    Extensions Issue

1.) Is the correct System Enabler file installed? This is pretty much required for any Mac starting with System 7.x.x (I'm not sure which version it was, but beginning in 1992, Apple started issuing these files.) Without the enabler, the Mac can't even run certain versions of System 7. I'm...

    Dual Drive LC

olePigeon, I know this is going to make me sound like a n00b, but how did you get the laptop hdd connected to the 50-pin cable? (Drive adapter, etc.?) If it was an adapter, that would be the first time I've ever heard of one for 50-pin SCSI. Now to go back to my lair of the rock I'm hiding...

    ID'ing iMac G4?

Ah, the LSR (Lump Stick Rectangle). One of my favorite model series iMacs. Always wanted one, preferably the last models before discontinuing. I was thinking of modding one or two so that they worked without the Luxo arm and LCD; basically just the base. I could then use an external video...

    SE/30 startup problems

Good to see it still works...well, despite the issue you're having. Just to verify, is the RAM you're using a 30-pin SIMM memory? Also, iirc, some capacities are not accepted, like 8MB SIMMs for example. This RAM chart (scroll down a little further to see it) should give you some clues...

Anyway to use a PS2 keyboard with my Mac SE Superdrive?

PS2 keyboards are NOT compatible. If you try to hook one up, you will kill both that keyboard and your Mac SE. Don't do it! What you can do is buy an ADB keyboard on eBay for cheap. Strange but true, you can use an S-Video cable to link the keyboard to your Mac (try it, if you don''t believe...

    System 7 68000 & Jpegs

I think "GIFConverter 2.3.7" will do the job; there's also GIFWatcher, but it only supports GIFs, not JPEGS. You can get both of those apps from here. You might want to either jump down to System 7.0 or System 6.0.x to minimize the RAM footprint. Also, I'm assuming you've got a hard drive...

    SE/30 Capacitor addendum

Mk, Resistors normally don't have a preference of which end is the entrance and exit points. You can install them backwards, if you'd like, and they still work. It's capacitors (except for ceramic-type), diodes, transistors, and other sensitive electronic components, that do need to be...
