I second CelGen's post, but I would look for bar code scanners made by Symbol, one of the biggest manufacturers of scanners. Here is one made by Unitech, but doesn't appear to have any included software. 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

Another thing to keep in mind is that the iMac G4 uses Parallel ATA bus for its internal drives. The drive controller may not have 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing), which allows for partitions to exceed 128 petabytes (128,000,000,000,000,000 bytes). The older standard limited you access...

The only thing I can suggest is to first get access inside to the logic board and inspect the 8p8c jack (RJ45). Is it a through-hole type or surface mount (SMT)? Do the joints appear to be soldered well or are they "cold"? I would check all that out with a continuity tester on a multimeter...
