    Another Freecycle conquest

Time helps. But depending on the sensitivity of your nose, some smoker contaminated systems stink for years afterwards. There is some tar film everythere inside and out that cleans up well with ethanol wipedowns. But the worst area seems to be right around the cooling fan, where gross powdery...

    Hello from my wireless 1400cs

I have four PB1400s that can be 802.11b connected. For daily use I have a PB1400c (MacOS 9.1) that has the Sonnet G3-333 upgrade, 64MB main memory, using a dedicated Proxim Skyline wireless card, that I am using now to post this. When not in use I just sleep the machine, so getting on the...

Tolerances for capacitor replacement: electronics query

For bypassing, it's a minimum capacitance rating, at which the noise on the logic board reduced to an acceptable level. The usual capacitance tolerance on modern electrolytic parts is +-20%. Further increased individual or total capacitance will slightly further decrease the medium frequency...

Tolerances for capacitor replacement: electronics query

There are exceptions but interestingly the aluminum electrolytics tend have the negative terminals marked with a graphic symbol and the tantalums tend to have the positive terminal marked with a graphic symbol. Count yourself lucky if the symbol is a clear + or -. Do not assume that that bar...

    Upgrading RAM in SE

Here are some ways to assist the pinch/wiggle/lift. Once the floppy and hard drive cables are removed, the logic board, with power and speaker wires still connected, can be unlatched at the sheetmetal tabs at the two lower case screw points and slid back still in its track until the power...

    Powerbook 1400cs

Well, should the mystery D shaped slot be .71 inches or 18 mm wide with a PCB 14 contact finger tab, it's likely the video card output connector to an external adaptor cable made by Apple, mine is marked 590-0831-A. The other end of this cable is a DB-15 female for monitor connection. With...

    Modem Issues, PB1400

Some things on my checklist: Cneck all preferences and remove any redundant downrev ones leftover from upgrading to 8.6. Check that background printing is off and disable print monitor/spooler extensions. Disable QuickCam extension if present. Restart. Appletalk inactive in chooser, and...

    LCIII and SCSI.

Perhaps with luck only a 1 amp fuse that supplies +5V to internal and external terminators is blown, causing the internal terminator to drag down the signals towards ground. See if the SCSI DB-25 pin 25 has +5V on it. On the parallel port devices this is grounded, so the fuse if there is one...

    LCIII and SCSI.

Zip100 identification tips: These are two non-exhaustive examples; there are others I do not own, such as the auto sensing zip plus model which is identifiable by the front bezel label under the eject button- Zip 100 SCSI Model number is on the bottom label and is Z100S2 No label above power...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

When you mount the zip media you are using on the 4400, do they mount as PC formatted zips with the pc designation and built in translation or as Mac formatted zips?

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

First get a complete backup. Then defragment the disk in case it's that. Then we need to get you a competent formatter that will test and map out sector defects and update the factory defects table. Then Blind Transfers and Allow Disconnect need to be disabled in the driver, something FWB HDT...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

Well, looking at the history thread to which you directed me, that Quadra has an attitude. Until you have a data backup maybe it would be better if all further rescue attempts be on a stable platform, perhaps your 4400. If the disk on a stable platform really accepts a Disk First Aid repair...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

Duh, I should have added Apple's Disk First Aid to the list, it fixes things that Norton Utilities does not. I have updated drivers using Apple's Setup tool, and even MacOS versions many times without clobbering the existing data files, but what I have not done is written a lot of data files...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

Some things to try... Will it manually mount from SCSI Probe 4.3? Norton Utilities, also any other boot startup, if you can get them to see it, then designate HD as startup disk before exit. Turning off SCSI Manager 4.3 (and all extensions with shift) now that driver is updated and test...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

SCSI Manager 4.3, just Google it, lots of info, in particular see http://db.tidbits.com/issue/251 which mentions the requirement for a "SCSI Manager 4.3 compatible hard disk driver".

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

Electronic, self contained, but the software one is a little non-obvious. You have to click in the rectangle lower leftmost to bring up a table of contents with hot links. The first page displayed has some chapter titles which do not respond to clicks, it's the introduction title at bottom...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

As if by magic, copies of the Iomega Installation Guide and the Iomega Software Manual have appeared along side the 4.2 driver extension. The Installation Guide has instructions for creating a bootable zip, and the Software Manual has the troubleshooting guide in detail. It would be...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

...(rolls eyes to the ceiling)... Well, you did suspect the off-brand hard drive, this may be the time to swap in another drive, Apple rom or not, just to see if the current one is not quite making the fast SCSI bus timing requirements re non interference with other devices. :?:

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

You may be beyond normal help. My favorite quote for this situation, from Apple, no less, from the general troubleshooting aid at http://www.appledoc.com/article2.html: "Getting multiple SCSI devices to work together is basically voodoo." In Mac Secrets, Pogue advocates following the rules...

Macintosh SE SuperDrive and SCSI Zip 100 Drive

It's great that the zip works on your 4400. quinterro beat me to the punch. You can use Apple System Profiler, SCSI Probe or similar to reveal the SCSI addresses that the system detects with the slider switch in SCSIID positions 5 and 6, and make sure they really are 5 and 6 respectively...
