    Freecycle: iMac, 9600, G4

Got the following from a local Freecycler last week: - Lime iMac/333Mhz tray-loader - 9600/300 - Sawtooth G4/400MHz I'm installing 10.3 on the iMac. The 9600 has 224MB RAM and a 4GB HD, and 8.5.1. I will probably upgrade it to 9.1. I haven't had a chance to boot up the Sawtooth yet. M

    Nice CC Mod

I agree this is an excellent mod, and that the stickers don't look very good (but I'm guessing it's a present for someone). My real issue, though, is that while it's very nice, it's not a CC anymore. I'm not a CC purist, but I think when you over over the original floppy slot, with it's...

How would you happen to install this?

wgoof is correct - the official Apple Service Manual says you remove it by bowing it outward at the center so you can get one of the end retaining plastic bits out of its hole. Therefore, you install one the same way. M

Help with Asante Ethernet card & Macintosh IIci

I thought the Asante cards (most of them, at least) worked with Apple's own drivers. If so, perhaps your problem is that the particular 7.5.3 installation on your machine doesn't have the Apple NuBus ethernet extensions installed or enabled? M

    Trenton School Conquest Part II

True - but I have heard that the PSU in the 5260 is interchangeable with the one in a 5400/5500. M

    Recycled goodies

Yeah, that's my experience too. Someone on my local Craigslist just gave away an eMac (I missed out, but as long as it went to a good home), and in the last couple of weeks I've gotten a 450MHz iMac, and a 500MHz iMac with 640MB RAM, 20GB HD, and CD-RW drive, off my local Freecycle. M

    Heavily Upgraded 7600

Very nice! That's one heck of a fast G3 upgrade in there! M

Did I match these hard drives with the appropriate PowerBook

From the looks of it, yes, you did. M

    Debian on Centris 650

It would be very usable, but only in command-line mode. Overclocked and maxed out, it would be bearable with VERY low-resource X windowing environment - but it would still be slow to the point of tedium. M

Did you get this iPod for free?

    Quick Question: iMac G3 CD-ROM

You can put a Powerbook SuperDrive in a Slot-loading iMac, if the SuperDrive is from a 400MHz-667MHz Titanium Powerbook G4. If the Superdrive is from a later Powerbook, then it will be a standard laptop optical drive, and therefore will not fit in the iMac G3, which, as Silicon Valley Pirate...

    New parts?

Hi, That's actually my listing, and the item actually is already sold. Sorry! I do expect to be getting a tray-loading drive (an exact replacement for the original in your 500MHz iBook) in a few days, but AFAIK that one's only a CD-ROM drive, not a CD-RW/DVD one. FYI, the slot loading drive...

    Quick Question: iMac G3 CD-ROM

Actually, there might be a compatibility problem, depending on what you're using it for. The slot-loading iMacs - at least the earlier (350MHz-450MHz) ones - use an older type of optical drive that won't fit in PC laptops or other Macs that use laptop drives. Same deal for the 400MHz, 500MHz...

    REQ: Sheepshaver compatible ROM

FWIW there's a package floating around out there called "Classic on Intel." It's a working install of Sheepsaver, packaged as a double-clickable OS X app, that automatically boots up and into OS 9.0.4 on a configuration with 256MB RAM. It's very handy - requires zero configuration and works...

    Q605 won't boot

I hate to sound like those people who say, "Maybe if I just let it sit for awhile it will fix itself," but... ... I have revived a couple of mysteriously dead Macs (no power at all, or chimes of death) by unplugging everything from the motherboard - PRAM battery, hard drive, floppy drive, RAM...

    Another iMac G3 Mystery

I found a solution - though I'm not exactly sure why it worked. I did an erase-and-install of Panther (someone at 'fritter suggested downgrading to Panther, saying "iMac G3s don't like anything higher than that." That wasn't my experience, but I figured what the heck). Since I did that, it's...

Whitening a yellowed IICI: first step.

Very nice whitening job! It's impossible to restore the original color without altering the texture, but as long as you don't make it shiny-smooth it will like nice when whitened. Question: you say you want to put a polish coat on it at the end? Is that because the sanding has left it feeling...

    Recent Conquests

In the spirit of our recent Lounge discussions, these are all straight-up liberations; that is, I got them for free. Non-Mac liberations are in parentheses. - Tangerine iBook G3/300 - Gigabit Ethernet G4/400 (dead PSU; parted out mobo and other bits) - B&W G3/400 - iMac DV+ G3/450 (dead...
