    PowerBook Pismo Display - yellowish

Also the yellowing display could be caused by the plastic/paper backing layer itself yellowing (I had a similar issue on a ThinkPad 380Z and various other machines), maybe take the panel out physically and see if there is any visible yellowing to any layers or the backing

    PB5300 Zip Drive Question

I own one of those VST ZIP drives for PowerBook 190/5300/3400 and put it to good use on my 190/5300 machines (and no, it's not for sale either)... there's a 3400c with a ZIP drive in the bay listed on eBay right now if anyone is interested BTW :) Now I'm trying to find one for my 1400c/cs...

    5300cs ... its alive!!!

My 190cs uses a 1GB IDE SSD (SimpleTech brand), running 7.6.1 fine (I removed the PRAM battery because it was dead, have not had any issues with the missing PRAM battery other than it turning on as soon as it is plugged in which is normal behavior for dead/missing PRAM) Just bought a few...

    Panasonic SCSI CDROM for 5300?

You can stick something like the CD Sunrise or FWB Toolkit on a Disk Tools floppy and it should work to access an external CD-ROM if you're looking to install from an external CD-ROM (works on pretty much any PowerBook, from 1xx to the later ones like the 2400) As far as booting from a CD-ROM...

    Using a 180c in a 180

Also aren't the bezels for 165c/180c thicker and have a 4:3 cutout for the 640x480 screen (rather than 640x400)? That will be an issue there with putting a 180c screen inside a plain 180 ;)

    Best Powerbook out of these?

Own a pair of 180c (active matrix version of 165c), as well as a trio of Blackbirds (520, 520c, 540c)... pretty good machines but be careful of the 2.5 SCSI hard drives (1xx/5xx don't have any logic board caps I know of, only the LCD and inverter I believe, as well as the 5xx power bricks)...

For those of you with VST drives in your Powerbooks

Yeah, I received a Wallstreet ZIP drive which I thought was defective; opened it up and reseated an internal connector (the one that connects from the ZIP to the bay connector board) and now it works fine :) (AFAIK it doesn't seem to properly support hot swapping, but it will work if inserted...

    Duo 2300C: Sad Mac

When I was rebuilding my 190cs, I did get the same 0000000F 00000001 error, and I found it was the trackpad cable not connected all the way... I'd recommend checking inside the machine for loose connections (for trackpad, RAM, HDD, keyboard, etc.)

    PowerBook 5300ce hard drive

Yeah, 1400 tends to be picky with drives (more so than 190/5300 or others), that SimpleTech SSD works perfectly in both a PowerBook 190cs and ThinkPad 755CX (same vintage)... Swissbit also seems to fail on 1400s (think someone mentioned it on an earlier post here)... may want to consider a high...

    Power Adapter Thread

I've had two of those 1400/3400 bricks fail on me (both would get a 0.0 reading at the tip through a voltmeter), so yeah those 45W adapters tend to be prone to failure... I currently use a Yo-Yo on the 1400cs with no issues (I think they'll even work on the Duos even though they are a higher...

Powerbook G3's vs Ibook G3's which is better?

I have both a PDQ and a Pismo, use both about equally... the former is mainly used as a bridge machine between the classic and modern Mac world (fills a similar role to my ThinkPad A31 in PC world), I have a USB and FireWire card for it, as well as the floppy drive, LS 120, ZIP and DVD drive for...

    PowerBook 1400c - ultimate upgrades

For Internet connection, I use a 3Com 3C589D based card (EtherLink III) using a modded driver by Cameron Kaiser, haven't had any issues with it so far in my usage (although I had a minor snafu involving dongles, found that there's two different non-interchangeable 3Com dongles) Sadly as there...

IDE to SD adapter in a Pismo?

In my Pismo I'm currently using a 32GB Transcend SSD (with a dual boot of OS 9.2.2 and Tiger), haven't had any issues but 9.2.2 does indeed boot pretty fast on it :) May consider a small SSD (in the 2GB to 8GB range) if the 3.2GB drive in my 1400cs dies, although I read here that some older...

Which laptop has a floppy that I can use to make 800k disks?

I use a Wallstreet as my bridge machine between the modern and classic world; I put a USB PCMCIA card in one of the slots so I can use a flash drive on the machine for easier transfer (the other slot can be a CF to PCMCIA adapter for transfers to 190/1400 PowerBooks, a FireWire adapter or the...

M4896 AC adapter prone to failure?

Recently the AC adapter (type number M4896, used on 1400/3400/2400/Kanga) on my PowerBook 1400cs died so I've been using the Yo-Yo from my Pismo temporarily; went ahead and bought another of the same kind and that was also defective xx( Is this a known/frequent problem with the M4896 adapter...

Wallstreet PDQ issues - apple talk and batteries

FWIW, I run my Pismo without the PRAM battery and haven't had any issues (I removed it because it was dead and I didn't want it to leak and damage the motherboard/etc.), I'd assume the Wallstreet/PDQ is similar (it's a pain to get to the PRAM battery on the Wallstreets though) If you don't mind...

    512MB RAM compatibility in Wallstreet?

Update: I replaced the bad 256MB Samsung with a different 256MB Micron (with the chips aligned in a 2x4 square; the other Micron was in a 5 vertical, 3 horizontal pattern) and now all is well and it sees the full 512MB... Now to invest in a CardBus USB and/or FireWire for this machine :D

    512MB RAM compatibility in Wallstreet?

I did run the original 32 in the top slot and it was recognized fine (with nothing in the bottom) so it seems like both slots are working... might try another 256MB stick or a 128MB to see if it recognizes it first before replacing the CPU card

    512MB RAM compatibility in Wallstreet?

I've been upgrading my old PowerBook G3 Wallstreet (so far I have a 40GB hard drive and OS 9.2.2 in it), the only problem I seem to have hit is the issue of RAM compatibility; I tried a known-working Micron brand 256MB PC100 from a ThinkPad 600X but it only gave me the "sad Mac" sound yet works...

    PB Pismo battery reset

I'm in the same boat with Wallstreet batteries, out of 3 I've received neither one of them worked (and that machine is a bit older than the pismo), even after trying Battery Reset... fortunately I was lucky enough to have a good battery for my Lombard (which also fits in the Pismo AFAIK)...
