Actually, I was aware of that tension spring, but forgot to mention it in the original post here.
My fix is for "damaged" drives, not just ones that need a bit of adjustment. If somebody has lifted the upper head far enough to permanently bend the hinge, chances are that they have also...
I've now completed the replacement of all electrolytics in my IIsi PSU.
Hopefully, this will have corrected the lingering system problem I have had, where the keyboard would start to randomly repeat keys after the IIsi had been connected to power for several hours. Wierdly, this fault would...
A lot of Compacts lose their 800k FDD when somebody damages them while trying to clean the heads. If the top head is lifted more than about 1cm the metallic spring "hinge" is permanently bent too far to snap the head down onto the disk surface when the head-lifter is released. I've done this...
Well that is a fulsome solution for the electrical connections, so fine for like-to-like bus KVM.
For ADB->USB there will still need to be a protocol-converter somewhere on the data path. For an A/B switch, where A = ADB and B = USB, you could probably fit a small circuit board inside the...
I've just found another 17" LCD that works straight up and no fuss
Samsung Syncmaster 740A. ($15 from recycler)
This is a really good unit with telescopic stand for height adjustment and good onscreen menu.
Whatever upscaling it did, it had no problem at all with the 66Hz sync.
I wonder...
I see a lot of A/B DB25 switchboxes being junked these days - the sort that used to connect two parallel printers to a port, or two hosts to a printer, before USB and ethernet printer networking. Should be adaptable for sharing ADB connections - you only need to switch 2-3 lines.

OK, since last post I have got a connection to a G4 using AppleShare (still on OT 1.2). The G4 is on Tiger - so OT 1.2 seems to work with Tiger for file sharing. For the time being, I can use the G4 as bridge for downloads. Meantime, I'll have a good look at the applefool material.. Tks

That test behaviour looks like there is a capacitance between the two tested pins. There might be more than just a transformer - perhaps some filter caps as well?
Strongly recommend getting the web page translated - Google translate usually works well enough to get the gist.

This doesn't get enough attention. The sense code implementation is the main reason a lot of LCD monitors won't work with Compacts, even when they are nominally capable of appropriate sync rates. The Mac video chip is programmed to be adaptive, but to shut down if it doesn't recognise an...
Thanks - turned out I had to re-name the install folder to "AppleShare Client Install", dropping the version number.
Funny how the Apple guide just says "Follow the instructions", but then doesn't give a basic instruction such as how to name your resource!
What is the benefit if OT 1.3?
So...
Acetone (nail polish remover) fumes are quite toxic - with this procedure you would want to make sure there is good ventilation.
Another way to crack the glue bond is to use a fine paintbrush or sponge applicator for the acetone (Goof-off is similar chemically) and keep running that around the...
I've upgraded my IIsi to OS 7.5.5 and am trying to get TCP\IP working. I have a Nubus network card that worked on a previous owner's AppleTalk network, going by some of the old network settings and locations.
Following guides from this forum and other sites, I've downloaded OpenTransport 1.1.2...
I'd back Uniserver's diagnosis, pending sighting of pics.
Also, I wouldn't rush to write off the rest of that machine. Those caps fail open, so no damaging electrical pulse goes forward. They usually only damage other components if the spilled oil and ruptured plastic actually flames enough to...
In vintage computing the main benefit of solving a problem is it helps you to find the next problem.
After fixing my IIsi logic board (caps) and its PSU (caps) I found the ADB keyboard beginning to act strangely. Sometimes it seemed dead, other times it would pass through a couple of characters...
Considering using an s-video cable as a substitute for an ADB keyboard cable (for test and backup purposes).
They are both 4-pin mini-DIN male to male. Any risk in trying this? Anyone done it before?
I just don't want to blow up an ADB controller or keyboard controller if there is some quirk...
I'm curious to know which, if any, caps in the Sony PSU have blown smoke other than the C105 4.5uf x400v.
I have a hypothesis that overheating may be a problem because the air inlet vent above the PSU heatsink is very easy to cover up in normal desktop use..
Rick
A fizzle on power-up is most likely another capacitor burning out, very likely in the PSU circuitry. It would be rare for this to happen without showing some signs of smoke or recent fluid leakage. Take a very close look at your analog board.
If you are lucky it could be the filter capacitor...
