Thanks! As a newcomer to the forum, I was not aware of this very useful compendium of tips, especially for the analog elements... It joins my PDF library.

.. so it must have been an upgrade kit?
To fit a Plus logic board into a 512k bucket, you only have to remove the tiny pillar between the two D9 serial ports. The SCSI ports sits there, and one of the Plus's DIN-9 serial ports is accesible neatly through the microphone-labelled hole on the...
I wonder if they sold any..
Visions of firemen plotting their attack on the way to a fire, using MacPaint, with a trackball, in a lurching vehicle, wearing big gloves, banging helmets to share a 9inch display..
Also curious about "logic board toughening". Are we talking 1 litre of hot glue...
I don't think the sticking-points here relate to much whizzing around. The slides move slowly and occasionally in one dimension, pushed by fingers, springs or the eject step-motor. It takes quite a bit of friction to stop them, or something jamming between two sliding components. The...

Thanks - I saw that. So it is very likely caps failure in the analog board, combined with modern circuit-breakers.
Seller asking $70, no accessories - would cost me $100 including freight, for a possible wreck.
Same seller failed to sell a SE for that price a few weeks back. Need...
The best bridge from an iMac G4 17" to a Plus is to use SCSI - either an external HDD or best is a SCSI Zip drive. Zip 100s are plentiful and cheap, and very versatile for that sort of thing. Use your iMac to set up a Zip disk with a compatible OS. Opinions vary but I think MacOS 7.5 is the...

Lower value filter caps sounds like a good thing to try. Not sure I'd recommend disconnecting entirely, though. Might you not get some electrical noise propagating inside the Mac, maybe affecting the CRT?
Typically a too-large filter capacitance will trip a fuse or external...
agree with Uniserver. I fixed my last sticky 800k drive just by purging the rails with spray of alcohol. Grease can attract lint.
I did oil the stepping helix though - sewing machine oil, then dabbed off gently with a a screw of paper towel, making sure not to leave any lint. Less is more.

Well I don't know if it's just me or my 512 (with Plus ROMs), but if I leave a disk in the slot after power-off, it always ejects that disk when I next turn power on, even if it is a boot disk. It seems to be part of the ROM boot sequence.
I'm not a Creationist, so I realise that the MAC can't...
OK, neat enough demo of remote command possibilities, but limited to the mains power on-off if I understand correctly.
To be more than a one-trick pony, this setup would need to be able to boot the 128/512 as well as shut it down. How can you get around the need to push in the boot disk after...
If the same problem occurs with 7 different machines, I would be looking at the house current circuit. Do you have heaters or other high-load items (like washingmachines, stoves) running on the same power circuit? Maybe the circuit-breaker itself is getting a little old and over-sensitive?
Sorry, you can't connect a VGA output to a LCD Studio Monitor via a chain of passive adapters, because the Studio Display does not recognise any analog signals, and VGA is analog.
The original line of CRT Studio Display, however, could take a VGA signal. People get confused because Apple's ADC...
Tooth-yellowing mostly caused by tea, coffee and tobacco smoke. Fortunately, most modern toothpastes contain a whitening agent.
I do not bother with de-yellowing any more than I would paint over a mediaeval chair. But for those who care, there is a vast online experience and correspondence in...
Well if there are different cable configs it would suggest there may be a different pinout - possibly relating to power rails. But both my IIsi and my 512k have red-striped cables. I seriously need some authoritative pinout info on this - any suggestions for sources?

Well I haven't seen the product yet, but what I am expecting is not reverse-engineered layouts for the dies of proprietary chips. AFAIK this small operation did not work with clean-rooms and electron microscopes, just painstaking buzzing out of circuits, notation and deduction of values, and...
I have the same setup as Macdrone, but different result. The superdrive works fine in my IIsi, and the 512k boots fine with my 800k drive in it. Voltages on the floppy connector are within spec. Suspicion turns to the analog board caps in the main power rails - maybe high ESR -> not enough...
I decided to try this out rather than rely on distant memories.
I plugged a known-good Superdrive into the internal floppy cable of my 512ke. The compact would not boot, and made those puff-puff-puff noises you hear from the analog board when something is pulling wrong voltage or overcurrent...
Electronics only AFAIK, and not PCB files (layouts would be copyright)
Agree with bbraun - the guy should not be ripped off as he invested years into that work and you would not want to kill the goose that lays golden eggs. It's just that anyone outside USA can only purchase via somebody in...
I'm sure the docs are legit, but I doubt the owner would want to release them to public domain as they are part of a former business that he owns. PM for details if interested.
