Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Glad to hear that. I've used mine for about a year and never heard the fan - thought it might be faulty. The area under the power intake gets too hot for lap-comfort though, while charging.

I'd first be checking whether the physical contact-switch is the problem. They typically contain a tiny spring-metal dome that can get deformed or broken in some circumstances, or the action can be blocked by a speck of dirt of some kind. First check the on-off operation with the continuity...
If the root cause is not delamination reducing capacitance, then it has to be to do with attenuation of the signals, and so most likely caps related. Or possibly gradual decline in the conductance of the traces leading to the screen edge connections to each matrix line. I haven't seen inside...
Schmo - a lot of us here get carjacked by life, on a regular basis. Good to see you coming back though. I've had several big re-cap jobs on the back burner for several weeks now. They'll wait till I'm good and ready.

Uniserver's most important warning is about not using the wrong solvents - eg windex. Alcholol and water are safe, I wouldn't risk anything else.
Myself, I always use dry tecniques to clean the innards of a mouse. The ball itself can do with a wash if the surface has become so slick it is...
When you get your adapter with switches, use a setting for composite sync. Some Macs of this vintage use sync on green, but the dev notes for the 11si quite clearly say composite synch, and my experience supports that. [you can always try both].
There are lots of threads on this topic to...
BOMARC's business was ripped off in the past by scanners/resellers, so he now only sells hard-copies on colored paper with heavy watermarks right across them, so scanning/photocopying is not really worth the trouble for any would-be rip-off artist.
When I bought some from him a while back, I...
Tell her you fixed it using your psychic powers. Just waiting for it to dry out doesn't sound so expert (but it does indicate maturity - I have known people to put an axe through a laptop just because it was wet and wouldn't boot...)

Since it is affecting both drives, it is most likely a problem with the eject signal or with the lines that send the eject signal to the eject step-motors. The common point for those lines is at the Bourns filter on the logic board, just behind the floppy sockets. I would check for a failed...
Same problem for me since the government outsourced "eWaste Management" to choppers and our local recycle shop was privatised. I suspect some reseller has done a special deal to get first look at everything, or maybe some staff are running eBay accounts for themselves. Hardly worth a visit any...
Can anyone explain to me WHY this is the case? It's not WATTS that fries things, its AMPS driven by VOLTS. Are the Apple PSUs rated in watts because they do not have proper voltage regulation? That would seem to be incredibly poor design, if so.
It would cost very little to add overvoltage...
Noooo! Not a picture frame!!! 8-o
These elegant machines deserve to live out their years in dignity.
The optical drives are just standard IDE/ATAPI models - I've swapped them for generics with no problems (you need the shorter form factor). If you disassemble, you may even find that the...
I believe you about techno! School computerlabs->techno->ripped cones.
I also love DIY hardware hacks, but there's orders of magnitude between subwoofers and G3 Harmon-Kardon speaker pods.
Schmo has been looking at replacements. There is a cheap "Hamburger" mono iPod extension speaker...
Wow! Those rotted rings make me wonder what kind of solvents were floating around the atmosphere where those particular iMacs lived. I'm imagining lots of chlorine, maybe hydrocarbons?
AFAIK those rings don't have any critical audio characteristics, they just have to support the diaphragm...
That twitch-and-die syndrome is almost always due to bad cap(s) in the power supply. The stand-by trickle current is enough for the power switch to activate the start-up circuit, but the main switchmode circuitry of the PSU is not kicking in. The most likely culprit will be a high voltage cap...
I'm always reluctant to recommend brute force, BUT...
I have sometimes found that if you insert a thin flat blade, such as a blunt kitchen knife, just between the side of the tray door and the iLamp body, and give it a little physical persuasion while it is carrying on with its KERthumping, the...
Funny how when you ask how to fix something, people suggest you get a new one! I'm too stubborn for that. I'm only on this forum because a lot of old Macs are worth the challenge to fix them (at least to me).
You wouldn't want any kind of glue like a rubber solution that retained a sticky...
You can also build your own adapter. There are several howtos you can find via search. I made one as an internal adapter for use in a G3 tower. The reason I did this was to avoid the octopus effect of the Apple adapter squatting on the desktop - kind of spoils the point of the Studio Display...
Following this up, I ended up making an order with Element14 because they have by far the greatest range of cap types and specs - usually a choice of several manufacturers and sizes - eg for SMDs. Much better prices than Jaycar, though I still walk in there for anything reasonably common that I...
hmmm - that sounds like a caps issue that hasn't yet gone terminal on your machines. Or a PSU maybe not delivering peak amps reliably? While waiting to find the right caps, I'll while away the hours powering my PBs on and off :beige:
