The Cat is cool, but totally impractical for actual work of any kind (except typing words on the screen). If you sat down 100 people in front of a Plus w/ MacWrite, and next to that a Canon Cat and told them to do some work (let them figure out the work) --- 100 of those people would be...
OK - this was anticlimatic. I made 6.0.8 on 800K floppies on my Quadra. I installed 6.0.8 on the Plus (it had 6.0.7). Rebooted. I saw my netatalk Appleshare volume right away. So who knows what was on there before.
Now just to install this on the other plus and the classic.
I still don't have the Cat printing completely, and I need to bring up my IW2 to complete the stand off. But I'm getting close. I suppose I should have a Plus on there, but the SE was available in March 1987, which lines up pretty much with the Canon Cat. It's really weird using one, if you...
UGH An aside- I was fighting for a day with this SE and it's Asante ethernet board till I realized the switch on daughter card was on "THN" -- and I'd been using a Thick-to-10bt transiver. A flick to "THK" and it works fine on that. The localtalk bridge to my new Pluses and Classic is still the...
ok thx for the advise and confirmation. I'm using 2.1.6 on 10.04 Ubuntu Server, and it built just fine.
I'll track this down soon. I'm making the 800kb Floppy install of 6.0.8 so I can test for sure on one of these Pluses. They have a lot of nice 6.x software that I want to grab from them, and...
Yeah, that may be it. Of course, when dealing with these pluses now I have to go into the land of 800k floppies.
But using the SE (which has ethernet on board via the Asante card) I have verified that my appleshare setup is ok using netatalk- that is, I can see and mount the volume. I've used a...
Right- I'm only interested in using my Appleshare Volume on my netatalk to move software around. I am not interested in TCP/IP.
The netatalk server should be putting Ethertalk frames on the ethernet network, which the Asante Bridge should see and bridge over to Localtalk.
I can see my...
I read around and build and deployed 2.1.6, since that was known working. I'll check my settings and try and tweak it. Thx for the tip on rebooting the Asante.
Yeah- looked here -- http://lowendmac.com/1990/mac-classic/
I can't believe Apple was selling a Mac in 1990 with 1MB Ram and a 1.4MB Floppy. Seems nuts.
AH - I need one of these now:
I thought I could connect my localtalk-only machines to my netatalk Appleshare server with just a LocalTalk Bridge (Asante).
I just got my bridge, hooked it up to my ethernet network and to a couple of localtalked Pluses. I'm using the original Apple localtalk adapters and cables. Neither of...
The Classic has just 1MB, which is pretty sad. I'm going to have to dive deep into my junk to find my horde of 30pin SIMMS.
Also, the Classic seems to have no internal HD- but it must be dead. There is no way those were sold without a HD was there? I have to crack it open tomorrow.
Had a great liberation today- two conquests in one day!
I've been watching these two postings on Craigslist for a while, and they hung around... so I finally had the car and a reason to go out of the city and into the burbs (where these were). I contacted the sellers and luckily they could meet...
Great News!
After trying the NAD and seeing it fail the same way- I made the only logical conclusion- it was the floppy. So I pulled the floppy from the PB150 that I have (amazing how floppy tech changed from the 180 to the 150) and make it work- and it booted System 7.1 Pro!
Sadly, the...
Ok, so you are correct, and the way it's spitting the disks out does suggest that it's something about the floppy the 180 doesn't like.
If you can share (I sent you PM) the actual 180 install disk images, I'd really appreciate that.
But I've also taken some steps to make what I have work:
-...
