Ok, so I'm comparing apples to oranges. It's still at least interesting to look at, to examine what was going on in 1990 and see two completely differnet paths to the same result - that is, a home computer built for the masses.
Designer of the Atari 800 (TIA, GITA, ANTIC) = Designer of the Amiga 1000 (Lorraine).
Jay Miner.

(as I'm sure most of you know).
what is the best detergent to clean up that stuff off the MB? I tried some dishwashing detergent w/ distilled water, it didn't seem to do much. I applied with a toothbrush.
Talk is cheap, here is mine: :)
1. Apple is better because it runs apps that are useful (for me), + iPhone
2. Commodore is better because the OS kicked butt and was amazing
4. Atari was better because I still love the 800XL
Yeah, the CX fan spins. Time to try my own hand at some caps. :b&w:
As for the SE, I'm not interested in fixing it- I have a good SE FDHD, and the other 800K works. this will be a practice machine to see if I can hack it back to life myself.
The 600 and 1200 came later- as AGA. This was ECS time-frame.
Perhaps a comparison between the A500 (still a 68000) and Classic is more apt. Or as people have suggested the CI and the A3000. But an Amiga 500 MB and a Classic (not Classic2) would still show what I am talking about. Apple was...
But you kinda miss my point:
in 1990 Apple COULD build the ClassicII MB. The Amiga 3000 was the pinnacle of CBM technique. CBM could not have built anything close to that compact form.
Compare these two boards:
- both are Moto '030
- both designed in 1990, built in 1991
Look at the sizing difference. I realize Amiga's had a lot more custom chips, but still, you can clearly see CBM (Commodore Business Machines) was no where on the tech level of Apple even at 1990.
The CBM...
Ah not tested before I bought, and it's mostly a bust. I'll post pictures in a bit, but for the most part these are going to just be practice machines for my soldering skills.
And noted on the Maxell.
CI - Maxell destruction. Massive massive destruction. It was sitting sideways so it was...
Craigslist- $30
I picked up:
- 1 NEC CDROM
- 2 x external scsi enclosures
- 2 x Mac SE 800k with 20meg internal
- 1 x Classic 2
- 1 Cx
- 1 Ci
- 1 IIgs
- 3 Extended Keyboards
- 1 ADB keyboard
- 1 MacPlus keyboard
Plus assorted ADB cables and a SCSI cable.
Not a bad haul, but these...
I've downloaded both Zterm 1.0.1 (68k) from the site and from MacGarden- when I unstuffit with S.E. 5.5 I get an empty folder with just a folder inside called "Sounds."
What is up with that?
Does that happen to anyone else? Am i using a bad version of StuffitExpander? It works on other software.
I have some K&T up in the attic still. This is a old (100+ years) Philly-Twin... The ceiling isn't too low. Soon the kids will be old enough to justify finishing the front 1/2 of the basement- and then I get to sneak in a 'storage room' for my horde. Until then, it's constant dusting.
Thanks again to Uni for the recapping, my Color Classic is now back and working great.
I moved over the AztecMonster 2.5 to CF into it, because the internal SCSi drive was just dead. Side note: how on earth do you remove those? Luckily, with the 2.5" Aztec i can just put it in a static bag and...
Did the jumpstart- the PS seems DEAD as a doornail.
I grounded a new 3.6v battery and touched the pos side to the white wire coming into the mobo from the PS. Nothing.
I guess I need a new PS for this guy.
Are these rebuildable?
