Well, I got the hang of reading schematics really fast—nothing like just diving right in. I have now successfully buzzed ALL traces on page 5 (video) which includes UC6 UC7 UA8 UB8 UC8 UD8 UE6 UE7 UE8 UF8 UG6 UG7 UG8 UJ6 UK6, R16 R17 R18 R19 R23 and all address lines mentioned back to the CPU. I...
That via does look a bit dark. Thanks for the advice on more flux. That seems to be a consistent message everywhere in my research—flux flux flux! Haha. Ok, so the via tests ok through the board and to R12. Actually, all of the capacitor connections tested good following a nice diagram I found...
There’s a shot of that area.
I did have one trace pull up (watched it happen) alongside that through-hole which I fixed with a wire. You can see the green insulation. But video was working after that fix (and I had a nice tinned stretch to pickup that trace and connect it to the via above...
One question that may make things go faster: are there some convenient vias where I can pickup address lines on the top side of the logic board? holding probes on the 030 pins is a balancing act. Now that I write this, I suppose I still need to do this at least to one spot if only to verify...
Having printed an enlarged page from the Video section of the Apple schematics, I have started probing. Once you get the hang of it, I guess these drawings are not too hard to understand. One thing that threw me for a few minutes was the repeated references to the same ICs. It left me wondering...
OK! Thank you so much for taking the time with this, especially the image. I will try to match up what you are describing withe the schems and do some probing. i really appreciate the hand-holding and hope it pays off with another rescued SE/30. I am also feeling better about my decision to get...
Thanks for adding experience to focus my efforts on the likely problem areas.
Another practical question. . . please forgive my ignorance, but I have seen you mention A0, A1, A2--are these references to pins from the CPU? If so, how do find them? I can see references on the schematics, but as...
ok, good advice for sure but part of my question is the practical aspect—HOW is this best accomplished? i assume continuity checks with a meter, but is there a good guide or reference i should use, or do we all use schematics?
I am restoring an SE/30. Before posting, I have browsed the forums and read many similar accounts. The main theme so far is “recap” first and foremost, followed by cleanup, patience, perseverance and hopefully, kind collaboration.
SO, one issue at a time and some background info: This is...
Thanks! I had JUST copied that same block instructions into a text file, went over to my workbench to setup MacTCP when the display flaked out on me. I am really looking forward to setting this up, but consider just the Pi bridging with file share a major win as I had no other way to move stuff...
Hit a snag with my SE/30. While loading and patching MacTCP and transferring some other utilities via MacIPpi, the screen started to shimmer and then flipped on black vertical bars! I have Jailhouse Mac unfortunately. This has nothing to do with the Pi software/localtalk setup. I recapped the...
Update:
Today I received the AsanteTalk. After hacking together a PhoneNet Terminator, I connected it to my LAN and to the Mac SE/30. I already have the Pi running and connected elsewhere in the house.
I was immediately able to connect to the shared folder from the old Mac. I have not tried...
yes, I have it running now on another Pi. Works great and serves my Brother color laser to our iPhones, iPads etc. I was just wondering if it will be visible to the vintage systems on LocalTalk. Sounds like maybe not without patches. In any case, probably a better topic for another post.
Here are some beta test notes so far. . .
I setup the image on a 16gb SD card running on a Pi 3b+.
It goes through the booting process with everything loading and scrolling by and ends by stopping at last line:
[OK] Started Raised Network Interfaces
There is no login prompt, no CLI—which...
From what I understand, I will have an appropriate use case for this setup:
SE/30 (no NIC) + PhoneNet —-> PhoneNet+AsanteTalk+Ethernet———> LAN with modern Macs, Raspberry PI running MacIPpi 5
Hoping to use this as method to move files to/from SE/30, install software on it etc.
thanks! I can setup the pi but i still need a bridge device. trying nit to break the bank, as the Asantetalks on ebay right now are overpriced, and with COVID my local vintage hardware place warehouse is closed/ online only (limited selection).
Hi there. . . new member to the forum here, longtime mac user. .
I just re-capped a Mac SE/30 which boots right up, but I am waiting for ADB keyboard/mouse shipping from ebay seller. This is exciting for me because, although I have used Macs every day for decades, it has been a very long time...
