Hi!
I'm writing a program on my Mac, but this one seems to be a bit troublesome. It crashes randomly (I suspect due to memory leaks), but no matter how long I stare it my code for, I just can't find what's wrong with it.
I literally spent hours going over this code and it all looks OK to me...
There's also a rather fussy jumper in one corner which has to be set or unset depending on which kind of RAM you're using.
Moral: try changing the jumper before continuing.
Although I suspect that the hard drive may be another of those dying Quantums, or at least one with corrupt system software, judging from this comment:
Is it true that, without a floppy inserted, the machine makes a sound like something stopping (there's a noise which gradually drops in pitch...
So if one could source a replacement speaker, then it's working again? Perhaps it would be helpful to ask others with the same issue if this could be the cause...
EDIT: To be honest with you, I didn't know you could get such high resistance speakers.
Which is why I've been looking at the bootlogs and replacing suspect files. But what can be so different between one startup and the next that sometimes when reading a corrupt file there's no problem, yet another time (and as one would expect) there is a problem?
To me, this screams of an...
More on-topic again, it took me exactly 15 minutes (no exagguration) to get Windows to boot this evening. I took a log of most of the unsuccessful attempts:
[boot]
LoadStart = system.drv
LoadSuccess = system.drv
LoadStart = keyboard.drv
LoadSuccess = keyboard.drv
LoadStart = mouse.drv...
I'm not planning on making a career out of coding (I'm actually studying electronics next year, and I have done more modern coding as well, by the way). I simply enjoy coding on old hardware for the sake of it.
I don't like emulators or virtual machines; I hate this "it does the same thing"...
My Linux PC's monitor shows a similar issue, but in the horizontal direction, when running in one particular screen mode. I can't remember what mode it was, but it's only that one (and regardless of what operating system or PC is driving it).
Other times it's fine.
I haven't touched the hardware since I installed it. I haven't even installed any new software recently (but when I was it was really touchy! Mostly settled down after that, until now...).
There's also a red one by the same seller as the wood one.
Quick! Someone rescue all four and clean them up before someone else grabs them and doesn't know how to clean them properly!
Windows 3.1 has recently been giving some trouble. The issue seems to be more or less completely random.
Sometimes what happens is that when I type "win" at the DOS prompt I get the splash screen and then usually one of three things happens:
The machine reboots (the most common)
I get...
They usually only let you select the most basic modes for unknown hardware to avoid the risk of choosing a mode that is incompatible with, or might even damage, your monitor.
