Fastest NuBus Video Card for 68k Macs?

Isn't it faster in some ways than the Thunder-series cards?

Largest partition for a IIfx external drive?

With 8.1 on your IIfx, you can supposedly use larger than 4gb partitions, but in my own testing they proved extremely unreliable. Feel free to try it out yourself, but don't believe it works until you see it with your own eyes.

    TCP/IP Network Tuning: IPNetTuner 1.4

Well, there's that whole thing about setting the window-size to be the same as the product of the bandwidth and the round-trip-time; making sure your MTU is as high as possible will help too. This is assuming you've got large, long-living TCP connections that are passing a lot of data. That's...

A quick and pointless IIci question

I suppose that if you glued the feets into place, it might be a little less convenient to re-arrange it...

    840av/ Nubus DSP Question

yeah, the SuperMac ThunderSTORM board is the same as the Storm Technologies board, 'cuz SuperMac bought STORM technology to get the DSP technology. That's awesome to load-balance across the cards. Congrats on finding GWorld SIMMs for your Thunder/24; I think they usually get used just as a...

    840av/ Nubus DSP Question

Not in my experience using SoundEdit 16; i think that statement is more talking about the fact that SoundEdit Pro was less fancy in other ways... but I may be wrong. That'd be me! I got about a dozen realtime effects out of it, too. It took *lots* of config-tweaking to get it there, but it sure...

    840av/ Nubus DSP Question

I'm not sure that SoundEdit 16 is an ARTA program... the only DSP-aware sound app that I know of for sure is (old versions of) Deck. You can do what you want, but only with certain DSP cards... the common ones like PhotoEngine and Thunder {II,IV} GX use their own software instead of ARTA. I...

    Voodoo3 in System 7

Yeah, I know. Considering that most of the time the system requirements are based upon "Well, what's the oldest computer we want to legally have to provide support for..." instead of any real technical requirement.

What programs took advantage of the IIfx's special features?

Format a floppy disk on any normal Mac, and move the mouse around while you're doing it. Now do the same thing on the IIfx. :-)

    Voodoo3 in System 7

All, Wanted to report the findings of my experiments with Voodoo3 PCI video under System 7 in PCI PowerMacs. The readme file says that the drivers require MacOS 8.1, and they actually mean it. The card works fine for 24-bit color up to huge resolutions, but without acceleration. The 3dfx...

Fun Apple article pitting an SE/30 against a Mac IIfx

It did, actually! I haven't ever tested them, but it'd be fun, methinks.

Fastest NuBus Video Card for 68k Macs?

And it's the card that everyone hated, because it had so many compatibility issues with newer system software releases. I love it because the architecture is so workstation-like: the card actually boots into it's own OS that receives QuickDraw calls from the Mac.

What programs took advantage of the IIfx's special features?

I don't think there were really any features of the IIfx that needed special software support... there was the IOPs on the floppy drive, SCSI, and serial ports, but those were all supported by the Toolbox, and any software that used the Toolbox got the acceleration for free.

Fastest NuBus Video Card for 68k Macs?

Oooh! Use the Apple 8/24 GC, complete with "wicked fast" RISC chip that's faster than the CPU in the IIfx. If you're whomping System 6 on a IIfx, you might as well go all the way and build the time-realistic top-end config. Whomp Whomp Whomp!

Fun Apple article pitting an SE/30 against a Mac IIfx

You're close there, but not quite. For accelerated options like scrolling, dragging, or QuickDraw primitives, the accelerated card will beat the dumb framebuffer hands-down. On the other hand, if we're talking about blitting data from memory into the frame buffer, all that fancy acceleration is...

    66MHz PCI in PCI PowerMacs?

!! PowerComputing clone with 66MHz bus as a stock setting would do it. Anybody got one?

That same Valkyrie video controller is the thing that lets it run Marathon on the full screen with a good framerate, something no other Mac of comparable spec can do. :-)

    compact mac preservation

If it works, it works, and keep it up. :-) For curiosity's sake, I did a few little experiments with a Mac LC, SE/30, and LC575 and Classic analog boards ('cuz I've got the 575 and Classic analog boards but not whole Macs right now). In the Mac LC, there is no voltage between ground and any...

eMac now at 900Mhz!!! (now with pics!!!)

Good show, sir! (from a chronic overclocker... I feel like I'm wasting something intangible if I'm not running a computer as fast as it can go, as opposed to as fast as its rated for)

    compact mac preservation

Note that this (awesome) advice applies only to the Color Classic and Color Classic II (based upon my definition of "Compact AIO"). All the black-and-white Macs from the 128k to the SE/30 and Classic II use hard-power, and there is no trickle power on them. If it boots immediately after turning...
