Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

I'm hoping that to some extent I can just shuffle the external SCSI2SD from one Mac to another, since I probably won't be using multiple systems at once very often.

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

It's not super fast, although it is emulating a floppy, so maybe that is just the way it is. I haven't really used it enough (or even had enough experience with compact Macs, to be honest) to be able to judge the speed. By the way, I believe the second "possibly accelerated system" -- the Mac...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Just a quick update: I received my SCSI2SD today and after a few configuration issues I have managed to boot the accelerated Plus from it, into System 6 using Gemstart 2.1, and I think it’s working fine. I am wondering if there isn’t some kind of incompatibility between the accelerator and the...

Yeah, I'm having trouble making sense of that photo from the magazine. Maybe that was an early version of it or something.

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but this explanation about the Plus’s SCSI problem seemed good (from the MacUser article):

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

According to page 99 of the MacUser issue I linked, the GemKit included the fan, power supply, and fast SCSI. So it seems less like an option and more like something you would have to buy to actually install the thing. There is also a mention of GemKit in a Mac Zone ad earlier in the magazine...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Regarding the SCSI question, this quote from MacUser indicates that the accelerator solves the Plus's wonky SCSI implementation (which to be honest I had no idea about -- I'm still learning). So I think that the additional SCSI port was an optional extra, and was intended to be a better version...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Thanks for the photos and info, Crutch. I've been doing some research on this accelerator. There was a very extensive article on accelerators in general in the August 1990 issue of MacUser ("Chasing the IIfx: Accelerators"), which gave the Gemini board a good review, and they said it was your...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Yes I don’t really think the errors are accurate, but of course something is going wrong. In any case a coprocessor looks to be extremely cheap so I may pick one up. As for the floppy, although I was able to get it working, I have tried several times and the machine won’t start up at all if I...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Yes, I just wanted to see it run with a barebones system folder to make sure it was working, and also because my Floppy Emu doesn’t seem to play nice with the Gemstart extension I am limited to what I can fit on a floppy. I went ahead and ordered the external version of SCSI2SD, which I hope...

Here is a better shot I took of the power supply from the bottom. Not sure about the connectors.

The battery door ribbon cable connects to the accelerator board on the bottom left, right above the chip that says "LOGIC" on it. There are a lot of unused connectors on this board, I noticed.

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

I've been having some issues trying to get this to work. When I tried adding Gemstart 2.1 to the system folder of my emulated hard disk on the Floppy EMU, it hangs at the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen, and the Floppy EMU gives me an error on the screen about a "changed write state" (if I recall...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Great, I'm glad to hear from someone who has one. Can you explain what exactly I need to do to take advantage of the speed increase? Where would I put the Gemstart 2.1 control panel and does it matter what OS version I use? Is it possible to do add it to a boot floppy?

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

Quick update: I did manage to get the floppy mechanism back into position so that it would accept a disk, and it does function, but (of course) the eject mechanism appears to be shot. The weird thing is that when I tried to boot it with both the internal floppy drive cable and an external floppy...

Took a gamble on a Mac Plus and SE that appeared to have accelerator cards...

While browsing eBay on two separate days I found a Mac Plus and a Mac SE that both seemed to have accelerator cards installed. The sellers didn't mention it in either case and seemed to know nothing about it, so it while I didn't pay too much for them, it was a bit of a gamble. Still, I'm kind...

    Macintosh SE screen flickering/changing shape

I'm still new to working on the innards of compact macs, but I could handle reflowing some solder joints if you think that might help.

    My Pismo lives again!

Realistically, I'm probably not going to be using this computer very heavily, so I'm hoping the SD solution might be enough. I will also be using Mac OS 9 most of the time with virtual memory turned off, so it will probably not be writing to the card as much. I did look into using an SSD but...

    My Pismo lives again!

I was living in Japan at the time, and back then at least they had a pretty vibrant "kaizo" ("modification") community. A lot of it was centered on things like the 2400c, but a number of people did modify their then-modern PowerBooks as well. I don't really recall people being particularly...

    My Pismo lives again!

That sounds like an interesting idea. For the moment I think I'm going to just have a Mac stationed next to the cable modem sharing its Ethernet connection via Wifi, but it's probably not a great long-term solution.
