I think you should be able to get away with 7.5 just fine. I'm on 7.6.1 on the 160 and it doesn't take much more ram.
The RAM limitation on the 170 is what keeps me away from it, despite the superior screen. My 160's screen is still pretty damn good now that I've recapped the LCD.
Oh man, if I'd thought you were gonna look for one soon, I'd have offered the drive from my PB160 if I can get a replacement scsi2sd soon.
I got the board, but it's defective.
It's a 160MB drive too.
Excellent advice, thanks! A little bit of a drop wouldn't be *too* bad since it's .6v over the OEM rating already, I'll definitely watch out for that though.
Just got mine built, works great!
i'm concerned about charging while in the device, anyone have a good solution for charging NiMH cells? Otherwise I'll drop a diode in the pack and just remove the batteries and charge them individually.
Just got mine in... and it doesn't work. The configuration/update utility doesn't detect it at all, the LED doesn't light up, and component D3 gets REALLY hot.
Most solder contains flux, but in many cases it's not really enough. A flux pen really does make SMD work a *lot* easier.
Just got the rest of my parts for the 160 in, about to have it running off SD with freshly recapped screen, and a custom battery pack!
I used a wick to clean, but then I'm use a good temperature-controlled iron, and am accustomed to cleaning solder pads like this with wick.
Also, every 3.3uF capacitor on my LCD had leaked, and solder sucker isn't enough to clean that properly.
Got it all recapped last night and it's SO much...
Image quality-wise, yes. Huge difference.
Passive-matrix seems to have withstood the test of time better though, a lot of the active matrix displays have a ton of moisture issues.
I've got one on order, hopefully it'll be in next week.
Seems I jumped on it in the nick of time too, they're sold out now.
Got a SDcard all prepared and ready for it with OS 7.6.1 and a bunch of apps/utils/games, which was more difficult than I thought it'd be.
Oh nice, didn't know the 160 did SCSI Target mode.
I hear the only real fix for the tunnel issue is to put the screen in a dessicant like silica gel beads for about a month (or maybe rice for longer) to absorb the moisture from the panel.
There should be pin adapters for that, most SCSI is cross-compatible. You'd just have to get an adapter that'd connect it up.
Definitely understand not being able to let it go. My 160 has quite a bit of history attached to it. Just got an email from the previous owner actually, wanting to talk...
I'd probably go 8.1 with that config.
7.6.1 is good, I've been using that in a virtual 68k mac environment booting directly from an SDcard prepared for the SCSI2SD that's on order for my 160, but the ability to work with HFS+ is a huge bonus. Plain HFS is kind of a pain, especially with large...
Oof. The floppy might be bad as well, flaky as those are... there's no shortage of bootable floppy images you can write to a floppy nowadays though. I'd try with a fresh floppy and give one of those a shot.
Otherwise... dunno. Take it all apart, clean it up and put it back together, maybe it'll...
Reseating the things can help, yeah. Also a capacitor replacement on the LCD can't hurt.
However, it does sound like your drive may be toast. These things are bloody ancient, I'm surprised that mine worked at all given that I picked it up from an outdoor stall at a flea market.
Can you boot a...
Tantalum has sigificantly higher ESR than the electrolytic or ceramic capacitors. They can add a resistance of 1-2ohm each.
My engineer friend recommended going with ceramics all around on the display and inverter board. I'm going to try that and if the result isn't desirable, then I'll go back...
External SCSI network adapter? There was an Asante on ebay a couple of days ago.
Other SCSI device such as Zip or Jaz drives, or a serial connection and a terminal emulator with zmodem support?
I'd say google around a bit, there's a few methods, you'd have to find one that fits your...
