Just because it looks clean doesn't mean the capacitors are good. They can leak, or they can dry up.
Many systems I see have caps that "look" perfect, but are in desperate need of replacement.
Backlight, it's likely the inverter caps. I'd go ahead and do the rest of the caps on the screen as...
I've done the 160 caps already, fortunately there wasn't any real damage to the board that couldn't be fixed. That smell though, uuuugh.
Went ceramic the whole way, no leaks now!
Oh eff, I really need to take my 190cs display apart and get the caps ordered.
Gonna get new caps for the mainboard too, the heat of the SSD is making them go haywire and causing it to crash.
Hm, wondering as well. My 160 has issues with the up/down roller occasionally. It used to be worse, but has actualy gotten a little better with use after being cleaned (it was filthy).
Right after cleaning it had trouble going up, but that's subsided a little.
A lot of the caps may not "look" bad, but with the SMD cans like these especially, they tend not to bulge or show obvious visual signs.
I replaced the caps in my 160's screen which looked fine at a a glance, but when replacing them there was the unmistakeable smell of leaked electrolytic fluid...
If that works, I'd be surprised and also pissed at myself for not trying it earlier.
There are a couple of ways to do this.
This is the method I recommend if dd doesn't work. It involves booting a Disk Tools floppy on the Powerbook and using that to partition and format the CF card, and then...
Which msata->IDE adapter did you use? I went with the QNINE $15 on Amazon and it only sometimes works. Ordered the $28 fancy-looking one today, hopefully it's better.
Using the CF card in my 190cs for now, it definitely gets the job done. Dualbooting 7.6.1 and 8.1 like a champ.
For anyone interested, if you're considering the SSD solution that FacnyFreddy is recommending, 16GB Sandisk mSATA SSDs are about $8 shipped on eBay right now.

I've got a Sandisk Extreme 4GB CF card in an IDE adapter in my 190cs right now and it's quite snappy. Miles better than the original drive.
Might look into the SSD option later though, I have a 32GB msata sitting around doing nothing. At least I think it's an msata? Might be M.2, will have to...
Oh yeah, the caps in the inverter board are typically electrolytic and can most definitely fail.
Just because it's radial doesn't mean anything. I had the "sealed" surface-mount cans that people think are super stable leak out all over the LCD board in my 160.
Horrible to clean up.
