Something I've discovered during the process of uprading my '475 is that the simple trick of turning the fan upside down has the effect of dramatically improving cooling (this way it sucks air upwards into the case and blows it out through the case slots and floppy drive).
This is my main writing machine - so much more focused and free of distractions than my PC. I also find the smaller screen helps.
Next step will be to find an extended keyboard for a better typing experience.
Thanks to some discussion on this forum, I now have a metric tonne of storage capacity in my LC475! I contacted Uniserver, who is selling SCA server drives at very reasonable prices, and he sent two over, already partitioned and installed with Mac OS 7.5.5. He also included an SCA-SCSI adapter...
I currently have a setup where my LC475 accesses files on my PC via an FTP server, which is great, but I would like to implement some form of synchronisation. I've just started using the Transmit FTP app (instead of Fetch) which has a synchronise option, but it doesn't allow two way sync; you...
Currently hitting "out of memory" errors when browsing Netscape - could be something to do with the fact that I only have 12MB onboard.
Just ordered a 64MB card from Ebay 8-)
Thanks for your replies, everyone. I mist admit I hadn't heard about the click of death, but this has somewhat put me off the idea of using zip disks long term.
Uniserver, one of your SCA drives is looking like an attractive idea! What capacities are they available in, and do they require SCSI...
Very interesting!
If you don't mind me asking, are the SCA drives you sell new, or new/old stock? Or have they seen some use already? Basically I'm looking for a drive solution that will last me 5+ years at least without worrying about it conking out at any point.
How much would you charge for...
So it sounds like you can use a Zip disk more or less like an external SCSI hard disk without any drivers ... brilliant!
I've thought about getting an SCA hard disk, but I don't think I'd have any way of partitioning a large one correctly outside my Mac (and as far as I can tell you can't do it...
That's good to know - thank you. I'm not sure an external Zip drive would fit inside the case of my LC475, but it's a nice idea! I'm still toying with the idea of getting a PowerMonster CF card adapter, but they aren't cheap...
Fortunately (for now) my internal HD seems to be working fine, but...
As insurance against the day when my LC475's hard disk inevitably fails, I'm investigating the idea of booting from an external SCSI Zip drive. Zip drives seem to be fairly obtainable through Ebay and at face value it would seem to be as simple as installing the driver, formatting a disk...
At the moment I'm running 7.1, but I don't have all the updates (just installed CFM68k). After some playing around last night I managed to get Netscape 3.0.1 running, although for some reason 3.0.4 refused to even see my network connection!
As I install software on my machine I'm starting to...
Using a Farallon ethernet card, I've managed to hook my LC475 up to my home network with relative ease and am able to access my FTP server and browse the web. File transfer rates are pretty decent too!
At the moment I'm using the Mosaic browser, because iCab continually crashed and Netscape 3...
Thanks for the tip, I'll dig it out.
Now managed to get the 1400c online via iCab (not sure if it's the best browser to use) and networked to my PC via FTP. Happy days!
I don't know how much L2 backside cache it has to be honest - it isn't mentioned in Apple System Profiler. Either way I'm happy with my bargainous purchase :) Can't believe how fast the machine feels - it plays Heretic faster than I remember my old iMac G3 playing it (probably because the...
It's kind of hard to see, but here's a photo of the screen bezel where it says "G3 Powered by Sonnet". The System Disk is my Compact Flash card. I've left the 2GB hard drive in there for backup / data storage.
