I havent tried the audio out jack to be honest. I will try that. I dont use the system with a PRAM battery in it though (and I didnt use a PRAM battery when the sound was still working). Do you think that fix may work anyway? Waht are the PRAM reset keys? Thanks guys

Actually on closer inspection the LC III is a 344S1033-B I believe that is the sound chip. ITs a 28 pin package. I am not sure what the 343S1069 is on the LC III but I dont think its sound.

This gets stranger.. Maybe I have found nothing. I just checked the dead LC575 board (which now is missing the DFAC2 and the Audio jack. The pads on the board where DFAC2 used to be show continuity between pads 37 and 38! Do you have a color classic? I could really use the insight of someone...

I took the chip off yesterday and I can see with a scope pretty far under it. I really dont see a short. I think its elsewhere on the board. Or the chip is internally shorted.

Those pads were damaged so the caps are run to the next trace off the original contact. Those are fine and not the issue.
