2930 at max transfer of 20 MB/s would be about 2x faster than internal fast SCSI of 7600. But it still would be 3x slower than modern wide SCSI disks are capable of :-) What exact model of disk do you have in 7600 now?
Cheetah is mounted internally via good LVD cable with terminator ;-) Mind you however that 15 k rpms disks have quite strong vibrations, so can be quite audible although their own acoutics are not on high levels :-)
No, contrary to Adaptec ATTO produced one type of card for all systems, at the same price. It is only a matter of firmware. There was no special designation "for Mac" coming with mine, I just flashed it with the latest firmware available for OS 9 and it works like a charm now :-)
Yes, you do, it's a matter of proper Mac-aware firmware. And ATTO cards are among these few bootable on Mac, you can download latest software and firmware for them from www.attotech.com I bought my Atto UL3S, capable of transfers up to 160 MB/s for about $10, they are quite popular and easy to...
Buy a cheap, fast Ultra 3 SCSI card like ATTO UL3S and modern high RPMs hard drive. I use in my PM7600/G3/400 18GB Seagate Cheetah 15k3 (15000 RPMs) and it is "wicked fast" - not only seek timing is minimal, but read transfer averages at 65 MB/s (measured using ATTO Tools) - 6x more than builtin...
Try Anubis 3.01, it is quite recent (works perfectly wih ATTO Silicon Express IV) and available here:
http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/stuff/SiliconExpress/
And it is capable of creating partitions with 64k blocks, that means partitions as large as 4 GB under os 7.5.5 :-)
I have Atto SE IV in Quadra 800 with mentioned 18 GB Cheetah 15000 rpms disk divided in 5 partitions (partition size with 7.5x is limited to 4 GB n older Macs) and it is perfectly bootable! The only real problem is that you can't install different OS on another partition and choose between them...
ATTO Silicon Express IV doesn't need any extensions to work and I can actually boot Quadra 800 from Cheetah 15k3 (I know, small overkill ;-) ) connected to it. I believe the FWB Jackhammer would work the same way, and these two are probably the only two Nubus 68 pin wide SCSI cards.
Check for jumpers on the card. Sometimes it is placed there to select right media type if you have two or more of them. I had similar situation with my Farallon Nubus PN 590 - its LED kept flshing until I moved jumper to "TP" position. But of course it is possible that that can be set via your...
First - congrats on your return to roots :-) I just acquired Quadra 800 - these were really nice machines - so much different than PCs from these times (unlike today, when most of inner parts you can find on PC motherboards...)
Yeah, onboard video is really good in this generation of Quadras...
I thought only first generation of Quadras (700 and 900) have somewhat "crippled" implementation of Nubus 90? Q800, Q840AV, Q660AV and Nubus Powermacs were supposed to have right implementation of Nubus 90 features and speed possibiilties. Or am I wrong and someone could enlight me in this...
