    Macintosh BBS Software

Hoping not to sound like a nit-picker -- smirk -- I don't think that it is completely accurate to refer to BBSes as being "text-only". Yes, I know that you base this on the fact that all commands were/are executed by typing numbers, letters, symbols or a combination thereof on the keyboard...

    Macintosh BBS Software

Cory5412, I am not dissing Hotline or any of the other client/server suites which were popular at that time. After all, as I have already said, I was -- and still am -- a Hotline admin, even if my resurrected Hotline server is totally dead in the water. I don't have bots or fake users logged on...

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

Yes, that is exactly what you will see when your computer or device is not properly interpreting the ANSI escape codes and colors codes. Did you happen to visit the Armageddon BBS website? On there, you will see exactly what you are supposed to be seeing on your device.

What is Spectrum, if I may ask?

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

By "works well", are you saying that you successfully telneted to my BBS? If so, how were the ANSI screens displayed? Thanks!

    IT'S ALIVE!

The Mac OS X equivalent is probably the revolving colored "beachball", or whatever Apple calls it. The nice thing about it though, is that unless in the Classic environment where the bomb freezes up the entire system, Mac OS X code is so compartmentalized,/sandboxed, that usually, only the app...

SheepShaver in Full-Screen Mode: Whoah Dude!

Here is a little trick that I recently learned over at the emaculation.com forums: In SheepShaver, you can toggle between full-screen mode and regular window mode, just by typing Control-Return. Not only that, but when you do this, there is no need to restart SheepShaver.

Whatever works, my friend. If you've got a telnet client or terminal emulator on those machines, go for it! :D

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

Your Performa will definitely work if you've got a telnet client for it. If not, I have a stripped down version of the Public Address BBS software which will do exactly that. All you have to do is select "Open Telnet Terminal" under the "Ports" menu. PA  is available on both my BBS, as well as...

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

Wow! One to ten seconds between typing each character??? Ouch! How do you endure such misery? :) BTW, sorry I missed you in chat. I logged on to the BBS, and then went into public chat, the very second that you logged off. Anyway, I hope you find a better telnet client . . . or use a decent...

    Use for an LC520?

Ha! A 30 MB file with a 56K dial-up connection??? No wonder you wanted to pull your hair out! Did you have any grandkids in the meantime?  You know . . . while you were waiting for the file to download?  :)   :D

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

Yes, I was quite surprised to see you log on with a smartphone. I had read that there are telnet clients for some smartphones, the iPhone included, but I have wondered about exactly what kind of user experience a mobile phone can provide for a BBS. I don't own or use any mobile devices myself...

    Use for an LC520?

But what I really find jaw-dropping is that I spent around $3K or so in 1993 to purchase a 25 MHz Mac LC III with 4 MB of RAM, a 160 MB hard drive, and I think a floppy disk drive, and a 13" or 14" 256-color monitor, and today for about the same price, you can purchase yourself a monster 24" or...

    Use for an LC520?

My speed growth over the years: 300 to 1200 baud Apple modem --> 24 baud Hayes modem --> 14.4 modem (don't remember the brand) --> 56k U.S. Robotics modem --> DSL line (can't remember the speed, but faster than the U.S. Robotics modem --> 2.5 MB cable modem --> 7.0 MB cable...

    Use for an LC520?

Ha! I doubt it. Most things are generally more expensive here than in the U.S. mainland, because we are an island which basically and totally depends on imports. I won't even bother to mention the shipping companies who take advantage of the situation, or the local businesses who use our...

    Use for an LC520?

My friend, ALL business people over-exaggerate and hype up their products. It is a sad world that we live in. I'll tell you what though: Be thankful for your 3 MB - 11 MB connection. The best I can get on my downstream is 2 MB / sec, and that is only with some connections. And I can tell you...

    Use for an LC520?

Slow, yes, but you say slow from looking at it from a modern perspective. As I have mentioned before, back then, our "slow" looked "fast" to us, because we had nothing else with which to compare it. It is only now that we have true high-speed connections that we realize how slow things were...

Calling All THINK Pascal Programmers: Hermes II Needs You!

Yes, some would say that THINK Pascal is an old, dead programming language, and maybe they are right. However, the fact is that the only true PC-ANSI-based, Macintosh BBS software that remains alive today is Hermes II, which I happen to use on my own BBS, the Armageddon BBS. In fact, as I...

SheepShaver in Full-Screen Mode: Whoah Dude!

I've been running the SheepShaver Mac PPC emulator for I guess about a month now. I use it to run my old Hermes II BBS, as well as my old Hotline server. However, it wasn't until a few minutes ago that I got curious and decided to up the screen resolution to "maximum" in both height and width...

    Macintosh BBS Software

As a former -- eight consecutive years running my Hotline server -- and current  -- back up and running again -- Hotline admin, I can tell you first hand that the Hotline server/client software suite is not a BBS in the truest sense of the word. Yes, Hotline has similar functionality as a BBS...
