Things are getting clear now... in order to put over 8 MB on the Macintosh II, I need:
1) The 68851 PMU (which I don't have) :(
2) Specifically for Bank A, update the ROMs to those of the IIx (or newer...)
3) PAL SIMMs
Issue 1...
Hi all!
After researching a bit, I'm still a bit confused about the subject... it's clear that both machines will work fine with 8 MB (eight 1 MB SIMMs) and that MODE32 is required in order to recognize larger amounts (32 bit addressing). But:
•My II is pretty stock -- no PMMU (has the Apple...
Not sure if my experience applies here, but I was never able to make work the CardBus FireWire card on my Lombard, from 8.6 to 9.2.2 :(
USB is likeley to work, but at 1.1 speed anyway -- pretty slow by today's (and yesterday's...) standards.
Wow, I just discovered this thread and it's freakin' awesome!. Like a dream come true...
Many thanks, dougg3 and all, for your research... and your will to share it ;)
Keep the good work going... all the best,
This is an old thread, but I'd like to add some data...
8 MiB SIMMs do work on the IIsi, but not on the SE/30 -- Death Chimes. They seem to be recognized OK by the Quadra 700; but mine are physically too large and thick (chips on both sides!) so they keep pressing against each other on the...
Probably it's already too late, but...
The arrow pointing west indicates where the pin 1 is -- put your FPU's indented dot towards west too.
Also, you can see the bottom left corner of the socket is sort of rounded/cut off... most PLCC chips have a similar indentation on the matching corner.
Can't say for sure because I haven't finished my hack yet, but... since the connector on both PSUs is very much the same (you're have connected a II PSU on a IIfx board, indeed) I don't think the IIfx has any way to "send information" to the PSU's fan (no spare pin!) so the fan speed control...
I think it should be EGA, too -- ot maybe that's an old multi-scan monitor? CGA has 200 lines only, while EGA has 350 -- very close to the Compact's 342, so it's very likely to work OK.
Anyway, it's a very interesting work! I see that you can choose between straight and inverted signals for...
I assume the Outlook preferences you mention is not a regular window, but a dialog box... they have no resizing controls at all, but there's a dirty trick that could help: use ResEdit to change the layout of that dialog, trying to cram it into the reduced SE/30 screen.
WARNING: ResEdit is a...
Wow, it's been a long time... but I'm back to this project!
@ bibilit: old Mac are indeed very rare in Spain. I got my SE/30 from UK... like my recent Colour Classic. And my second SE/30 from Germany ;)
In the meanwhile, I purchased a beautiful, working IIfx PSU -- I understand that they're...
I downloaded my SE/30 schematics from http://dyne.org/museum/apple/stuff/mac/andreas.kann/schemat.html, but unfortunately it seems no longer available...
However, since this info may be of great interest for many of us, I have put a copy on my personal web server. Cannot guarantee continuous...
LOL. My bad! Didn't notice the SCSI part... :I
Good advice. Most of the "danger" of mistaken connections between the several DE-9 PC video ports should be related to applying a higher-than-expected frequency sync to a fixed resolution CRT, though.
I'm afraid so... Apple's cards won't supply...
Just a few ideas... a couple of days ago we were talking about SCSI problems:
I think the aforementioned symptoms would arise if the SCSI chip was bad in the part that interfaces with the 68030 etc. But it could go wrong in many ways. Still not sure if it's the culprit, but my first, just...
Thanks for the scan! Now, looking at it, the SE/30 compatibility is only mentioned about the Power Portrait (accelerated monochrome); but then, the PV initials everywhere in my card suggests it's a PageView -- GS (grayscale) back then.
Anyway, that ad is from 1992, a bit earlier than my card...
Washing the mobo is likely to help -- it removes the nearly invisible crud from the capacitors which in turn is what makes for most of the malfunction. But sooner or later it will need recapping.
Just don't forget to take out the battery and the SIMMs... and let it dry for a week to be safe!
The datecode on the chips that I can see are in the range from 8911 (!) to 9032...
There is what looks like a declaration ROM: a pretty much standard 28-pin ceramic DIP EPROM (12.5 V programming) with a 'PVAS3 4.00' label covering the window. There are three more labeled chips, 20-pin plastic...
Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, my previous search attempts on Google, AppleFritter and this very site were unsuccessful :(
I'm aware of the plethora of video standards around the DE-9 connector... that's why I won't try to connect anything until I'm certain enough about the particular...
Hi all,
The last days have been very good for my 68k collection... among a Mac II, a Colour Classic and a much lusted (for decades!) Apple Portrait Display, I got my second SE/30!
Looks great, boots fine (has 7.0 in a Quantum LPS40), sounds loud and clear so it may take some time before...
Funny... I've never been able to boot from different partitions with my Quadra 700 -- it always goes to the first partition in the drive, and then the Startup disk control panel shows all the partitions of the drive highlighted! No problem between different drives, though.
On the other hand...
