Certainly, the floppy is the other major +12 V consumer... I'd try to fully disconnect the floppy (including the flat cable!) and check whether the +12V rail operates again. Check also the external floppy connector, there's a +12 V line that could be shorted.

AFAIK, 72-pin SIMMs have 12 address lines -- multiplexing rows and columns, as usual. That makes 24-bit, or maximum 16M words of 32-bit each => 64 MiB. May I suggest the Compaq/HP BD07285A25 (73 GB)? It's a Ultra-320 SCSI disk with SCA 80-pin connector, thus you'll need an (inexpensive)...

I like 8.6, I use it on my maxed-out (288M, 604e @ 233 MHz) 7500 (and on dad's too). But if you're relatively tight on RAM, you may try 8.1, at least is able to access HFS+ volumes

StuffIt 5.5 runs fine on 7.5.5, and is compatible with most (if not all) .sit files, unlike earlier versions. I think you can even use it on 7.1 if you have the Thread Manager extension installed.

As far as I know, the PS/2 protocol is well documented, and not really hard on CPU/MCU -- within the limits of a 6502 CPU. But the ADB protocol seems rather arcane... :?: If that's a 68HC11 equivalent and a standard 28-pin EPROM, the whole circuit could be easily reproduced.
