    getting rid of the jailbar pattern

    Hi! ·Unlike the remaining compact Macs (SE included), the SE/30 has separate VRAM, thus the regular DRAM SIMMs shouldn't be related in any way to your video issues. The VRAM contents could be copied from DRAM sometimes, but also from ROM, from other sections of the VRAM itself, or even directly...

    Run Mac OS 9 on a PM 6100?

    OK, I stand corrected! Thanks for clarifying! Now I understand why, from my large collection of 32 MiB EDO-SIMMs, only two of them are properly recognized by the LC475...

    IISI nubus adapter in an SE/30

    Good point, trag. However, just checked the SE/30 schematics and its FPU's /CS signal comes directly from the GLUE chip, and nothing else is connected to it, so that one won't be disabled. Also, from the IIsi PDS/030 slot specification, I can't see anything directly related to the FPU, so it...

    IIsi HDD getting 5V but not 12V - I think - advice?

    Certainly, the floppy is the other major +12 V consumer... I'd try to fully disconnect the floppy (including the flat cable!) and check whether the +12V rail operates again. Check also the external floppy connector, there's a +12 V line that could be shorted.

    IISI nubus adapter in an SE/30

    According to the datasheet, the FPU in 68-pin PLCC has not one, but eight VCC leads :'( And twelve Ground leads. However, I think a less intrusive way to disable the FPU would be applying VCC to the /CS input (Chip Select, pin 29 -- third from the right of the top row if the index dot is at...

    Run Mac OS 9 on a PM 6100?

    AFAIK, 72-pin SIMMs have 12 address lines -- multiplexing rows and columns, as usual. That makes 24-bit, or maximum 16M words of 32-bit each => 64 MiB. May I suggest the Compaq/HP BD07285A25 (73 GB)? It's a Ultra-320 SCSI disk with SCA 80-pin connector, thus you'll need an (inexpensive)...

    Run Mac OS 9 on a PM 6100?

    I like 8.6, I use it on my maxed-out (288M, 604e @ 233 MHz) 7500 (and on dad's too). But if you're relatively tight on RAM, you may try 8.1, at least is able to access HFS+ volumes

    IISI nubus adapter in an SE/30

    Will these suffice? (click on the images for a large version, around 3.5 MB each) I thought the main culprit of the SE/30 not working with the IIsi NuBus adapter was the extra FPU... but did some experimenting and got interesting results: NuBus adapter with soldered FPU: chimes, but...

    Quadra 800 and stuff

    If that card works like the 820-0547-A on my Quadra 700 (now known as Power Quadra 700 8-) ) I think it always take control first, then if set on 680x0 mode, quickly lets the original CPU boot -- but the usual '040 chime plays after a slight (somewhat less than a second) delay, while on PPC...

    Stupid but very important question!

    StuffIt 5.5 runs fine on 7.5.5, and is compatible with most (if not all) .sit files, unlike earlier versions. I think you can even use it on 7.1 if you have the Thread Manager extension installed.

    Magento-optical disks/drives

    My experience with MO disks was great -- well worth the effort! Purchased my first MO drive in 1996 (640 MB 3.5", compatible with 230 MB cartridges among others). After a couple of years, this unit became somewhat unreliable (but still usable!) so I purchased another one, Fujitsu branded --...

    840av ports and where to get video ram?

    I would NOT recommend memoryx.net (neither their subsidiary welovemacs.com) -- poorly made modules, unreliable, extremely bad customer service

    Stupid but very important question!

    Strange... the SE/30 doesn't need parity modules, but they should work fine too -- the extra chip is simply ingnored (not connected to the datapath) The last link seems to be compatible memory, but the previous one should have worked too -- they did on the LC II, didn't they?

    Skunkworks PS-2 <-> ADB Project

    Right. As already mentioned, the main use for this is not the mere keyboard adaptation (with ADB peripherals sort-of-readily available) but to learn things about the ADB protocol. That would imply examining the original code in order to get the required specs of the protocol, and then creating...

    Skunkworks PS-2 <-> ADB Project

    OK, now we're talking ;) First of all: please cover that EPROM quartz window! We don't want that valuable code erased by ambient UV light... I shouldn't be writing this (nor even lurking the 68kmla forums) becasue I'm on the last days of a terrible fortnight at work... but I promise to get...

    Anyway to use a PS2 keyboard with my Mac SE Superdrive?

    As far as I know, the PS/2 protocol is well documented, and not really hard on CPU/MCU -- within the limits of a 6502 CPU. But the ADB protocol seems rather arcane... :?: If that's a 68HC11 equivalent and a standard 28-pin EPROM, the whole circuit could be easily reproduced.

    SE/30 Conquest

    I'm afraid that you need to degauss the electron gun (as tecknight indicated) around the CRT neck, not the front of the screen -- that could help with colour CRTs because of their shadow mask; but B&W tubes are "empty" at the front. Placing the iMac CRT close to the SE/30 will deflect the...

    IIci ROM in SE/30

    I think the simasimac-like pattern of a ROM-upgraded SE/30 on power-up is because if this: Those "modern" ROMs (for the IIfx, IIci, IIsi) were never meant to be used on a compact: they expect either the RBV chip (ci, si) and/or a NuBus card. These video architectures seem to need being enabled...

    Problems, problems...Where do I begin?

    You're right, Control Panels weren't treated as mini-applications until System 7. The nice thing about Mt. Everything is that, besides being able to use the driver installed on disk (like any other SCSI-mounting utility), it can use its own driver, leaving the disk untouched -- pretty slow, but...

    Problems, problems...Where do I begin?

    Hi and welcome! About 5 and 6: 5) I have used several 80 pin SCA drives with my vintage Macs, with great success -- within their expected limits of course. I'm using an inexpensive SCA-to-50pin converter, I assume without termination of the unused byte... but just a few things to consider...
