Help me diagnose this PowerBook 160

If it has a Conner drive in it, it means that the head assembly is stuck. You can open it and apply some thin tape on the two rubber bumpers. this should fix the drive

Opening a Powerbook power brick (revisited)

Great!, it looks like those pencils were made for the job, the size is perfect.

Analog board with Voltage too low then too high

Try replacing the optocoupler or the two diodes nearby

Greenish tinted screen Macintosh Centris 650

I had a Quadra 700 do the same thing, once I installed System 7.5, the problem went away. Sometimes it comes back when I boot 7.1, but as soon as I boot 7.5, it goes away! Does your machine have upgraded VRAM?

    SE no ADB

There is a Fuse on the board, don't rememeber its name or location, but it is close to the ports

Bring back to life a stuck Macintosh Quantum / Conner SCSI hard drive

The Conner drives have a much bigger problem: the gasket that seals the two halves is also made of rubber, overtime it melts and becomes liquid. If you don't remove it in time, it will melt and coat the disk with molten rubber, making it impossible to recover

Bring back to life a stuck Macintosh Quantum / Conner SCSI hard drive

Yes, both you and techknight discovered and solved most (if not all) of the problems I fixed in my videos, I'm just sharing the way I fix them. I know that techknight made a video a few years ago, I've just showed how to make it less temporary by isolating the molten rubber thus preventing the...

Bring back to life a stuck Macintosh Quantum / Conner SCSI hard drive

It seems like 2015 is the year of failing drives and stuck heads, I've made a very quick and rough video showing how to squeeze out some extra life from stuck drives. This trick also works on the bigger "brick" drives usually found in earlier macs like the SE ad SE/30. And also works on SCSI...

Macintosh Portable only works when connected to the AC adapter

I made the measurements again and (as always) techknight is correct about the battery connector, There should also be a diode in series with the 9V battery. About five days ago, the Portable started squeaking and the display flashing while the floppy drive was connected and/or in use (with...

Macintosh Portable only works when connected to the AC adapter

Hello. I'll try swapping the main MOSFETs with brand new parts. Unfortunately I cannot find the original IRF9Z30, but I found two suitable replacements: IRF9Z34 and IRF9540. which one do you think is the best replacement? As for the battery, I'll worry about the mounting method one I get the...

Macintosh Portable only works when connected to the AC adapter

Unfortunately I live in Italy, and a single Cyclon costs about 15€!, opening the battery should be easy. Tried slightly heating up the hybrid, still no change. I also took a look a the analog input of the Power Manager chip, and the battery level displayed by the computer is related to the...

Macintosh Portable only works when connected to the AC adapter

The battery is brand new and charged, it is one of those normal black bricks. I just bought it for testing, since the Cyclon are crazy expensive. I did a visual inspection of the board, but I didn't find any broken trace or via (with a light under the board). The battery bay switch is also...

Macintosh Portable only works when connected to the AC adapter

Hello! I recently acquired a Macintosh Portable M5120, when I power it from a brand new (and charged) lead battery, it runs fine until it tries reading from the floppy drive or it spins up the hard disk, at this point the machine goes crazy: sometimes it will freeze, sometimes it will go in a...

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

Yes!, But I've also seen (here in Italy) lots of listings for fully working machines. My Macintosh 128K works perfectly and it has never been repaired (still has the original double-sided sticky tape holding the vinyl cover to the AB). Maybe the International version of the board is slightly...

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

I cleaned and bent back pins in the connector, adjusted the cut-off and... Done! Now I only need to find some ROMs for it Again, out of all of the ABs I've repaired, I've never found one that needed new capacitors (I haven't fully recapped this yet, just swapped two caps)

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

The speaker tested fine, so I swapped the main logic board cable and... It also brought sound back! Now I can power the machine without the Variac and it chimes perfectly! At this point, I need to find new contact clips for the cable and them it's ready to go! Oh, and also get rid of those...

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

Actually, the mac chimes and boots (using an external speaker and hard drive). So this board has no audio and no video + unregulated power supply.... Great! At this point, I think I'll take a look at the video section (the flyback is new). As for the sound, I don't think there is much on the...

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

If I power the machine with a Variac, I can get it to provide the correct voltages without ticking or going into protection, the voltage control trimmer lets me adjust (not by much) the output voltage. But there is no chime, video or sound. The logic board is good as I've tested it in the other...

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

I did replace the Optoisolator with a brand new CNY17-3, which worked perfectly in the other ABs I've repaired. Where is the filter network?

    Another "Ticking" Macintosh Plus ED

But usually when a capacitor is shorted/leaky, the DC voltage is lower than it should be. If a capacitor is open I will get loads of ripple on the rail, but I've never seen an electrolytic capacitor go open. Also, I noticed that the Boards in the 128K/512K don't have as many problems as the...
