Easily connect old Macs to WiFi with a range extender

Here's a shoutout to one of my favorite pieces of modern gear that makes it super easy to connect a vintage Mac — and anything else — to your home WiFi. The Netgear N300 range extender is a very small, full-fledged router that includes an Ethernet jack on the bottom to connect a wired device...

    Monitor IIc Adjustment

Yo, MultiFinder, can I ask you how you're outputting video to this monitor? I'm doing the same thing with mine, but text readability is an issue at 240i. If you've got yours working at 480 with no flicker, I'd like to hear about that.

Easy nerdery/general nonsense with an Apple IIc monitor

I saw a bunch of posts that described using an Apple II as a dumb terminal to a modern machine. The guy who made A2SERVER practically wrote 5,000 words on it. That sounded interesting, but then a bunch of people sniped me on eBay when I tried to buy a IIc. (People are spending hundreds of...

Fun with remote management: Controlling SE/30 from macOS Sierra

Nice tip on using Wine! Very cool. What version are you using on your Macbook there? I remember not being able to get rid of the sidebar on the Control window. Looks better with a thin bezel. Edit: Oh, it's Windows. And what's that launcher you have going on at the bottom?

    Newb Apple II question

    Newb Apple II question

Thanks, everybody, for the responses. I read somewhere that if you do the reverse, i.e., plug a IIgs monitor into a IIc, bad things happen. Ergo, post.

    Newb Apple II question

Can I use an Apple IIgs with an Apple IIc monochrome monitor over the IIgs's composite out?

Fun with remote management: Controlling SE/30 from macOS Sierra

That's cool. Really, I was more surprised that the machine itself could handle it, nevermind the bandwidth. Back in the day, I'm sure it was murder. I remember using NetMeeting on dialup and being blown away that videoconferencing was possible — I thought the future had really arrived.

Yeah, I'm not in ANY hurry to abandon 2017. Cheers.

    Windows: Yes. I don't think there's a Linux client.

Fun with remote management: Controlling SE/30 from macOS Sierra

This will be old hat for many of you, but someone else who's getting into the hobby might find it useful. I decided to see if I could remotely access my SE/30 from my primary machine, fully expecting that if I got it to work, it would be completely unusable. It ended up working really well...

Bus error/bomb on SE/30 repeatable in one game

Installing more RAM on my SE/30 greatly reduced the number of time bombs I saw in day to day use. You can also increase the amount of memory allocated to a program with File --> Get Info.

SE/30 + Asante Ethernet: close, but no cigar

Here are the two archives I have lying around. Unzip this file on a modern mac to get the Old World archives. Since writing the comment you quoted, I was able to get Stunnel working on my primary Mac using the config file another forum member posted in this thread. If Gmail is your goal, that...

SE/30 + Asante Ethernet: close, but no cigar

You're on the right track. The Asante disk will install the correct drivers for the card and ensure you have Open Transport networking available (accessible via Macintosh HD > apple extras > network software selector) and the TCP/IP control panel (different from MacTCP.)  Is the floppy...

SE/30 + Asante Ethernet: close, but no cigar

Looking back at the table of products in that document, if your card is a 30ie, it does not support 10baseT connections. Verify your model by running the other utility in the same folder as the Troubleshooting utility.

SE/30 + Asante Ethernet: close, but no cigar

When I installed mine, I just did the easy install. By the part number, it looks like you may have a MacCon 30ie. I don't recall if mine has different markings on each board, but I don't think that should cause you much concern. I uploaded the manual for MacCon ethernet cards for you here. My...

SE/30 + Asante Ethernet: close, but no cigar

It passes buffer, NIC and loopback. That other utility in there also reminded me that it's a MacCon 30si, FWIW.
