    Apparently Possessed 400k Floppy Drive

So I fired up my original Mac for the first time in about a month, and the floppy drive seems to have been possessed by a demon in the interim.   The drive will read/boot from a disk no problem, but it makes an unholy sound whenever it reads or writes to the disk.  See attached movie.  It...

    Kendall's Collection and Finds!

Updated office setup.  Two new machines (the Mac Pro and the Apple II+) required some rearranging (not to mention all the computers and furniture were removed from he room so I could use it as a ringworm quarantine room for my cats. Ugh).  Now I just need to figure out where I am going to hang...

    Apple II+ Question

They seemed to have just about everything.  Here is their catalogue-- it is pretty comprehensive: http://anchor-electronics.com/price-list.pdf

    Apple II+ Question

Good deal.  Anchor was really a neat place -- the workers were very helpful.  It kind of makes me want to start learning how to replace capacitors and solder stuff. One thing the Anchor worker brought up that I hadn't thought of -- do I need to worry about the capacitors on the language card...

    Apple II+ Question

And, most importantly, it appears the Apple II Plus now accepts that it does, in fact, have 64k of RAM:

    Apple II+ Question

By way of update: I went to Anchor Electronics and bought 8 new 4116, 150ns chips (as well as one of each logic chips on the language card for backup purposes).  I replaced all the RAM chips on the language card and then ran the A.P.P.L.E test program.  The language card RAM passed all the...

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

That is an interesting alternative.  I am thinking of getting something in the 3-4 GB variety.

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

Ok, so I have tried to locate a good card to use in this machine.  I want to use a "flashed" version of a card, cause I want native support, the boot screen, etc. I have a budget (max) of around $500.  I was originally looking at this (but then it sold out)...

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

muahahaha.  I found my Snow Leopard DVD.  It's a little worse for wear, hopefully it will install without error. Since the main HD has OS X Server on it (this machine was a Powerschool server for the high school), it won't let me install 10.6 over it.  So I am installing it on the second hard...

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

Ya, I saw that, but from what I am reading, the machine on which you install El Capitan has to already have 10.6.8+ ...  is that wrong?

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

Ugh, seems like I need to buy a 10.6 DVD.  I have bought it in the past, but I can't find my DVD anywhere.  So much for updating tonight.

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

So I got my monitor and fired this up.  It has Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 on it.  It does not have the Mac App Store on it.  Is there a link somewhere that has some of the newer system software (10.6-10.9) for free download outside the App Store?  I would like to eventually put El Capitan on it...

With an upgraded graphic's card are they still usable for processor or graphics intensive stuff (like gaming)?

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

Also, if anyone has any good recommendations for a display to attach to this, I would appreciate it.  I am looking to spend like $200 or so and have been looking for refurbished/used displays in good condition.

Can you make it up to the SF area any time soon? Or part of the way?

    Nehalem Mac Pro question

I recently acquired, for free, a 2009 Mac Pro - dual, 4 core 2.26ghz Xeons, 12 GB RAM, 2 640 GB hard drives, and an NVIDIA T120 with 512MB. I am thinking of turning this into an every day machine for work and gaming. I can pick up one of the old aluminum Apple LCDs for $130 and I was thinking...

My last G4 Died, and prices are increasing on ebay

Well I thought one of the machines I was picking up today was a G4, but it wasn't, it was a 1.8ghz dual processor G5.  The lowest OS it can run is 10.3.4, I believe, so I don't think it will match what you're looking for.  Sorry :(

    Kendall's Collection and Finds!

G5 appears to be a 1.8ghz dual processor model.

    Kendall's Collection and Finds!

Called my old high school to see if they had any old macs they were getting rid of. They said they had two "real old" ones going to e-recycling this week. Went and picked them up. For free. One is a G5 of unknown vintage. The other is an 8 core 2.25ghz Xeon Mac Pro with 12 GB of RAM and two...

My last G4 Died, and prices are increasing on ebay

It definitely can be done -- One of the computers my family had growing up was the first-gen G4 systems with AGP graphics.  It shipped with OS 8.6.  My college computer was a 2002 Quicksilver (933mhz) and shipped with 9.2...
