both work fine, the free one just have a bad HDD, and the other one has an atx psu. i have kept them both the way they were except for the new HDD

i work as the mac repair person at the local recyclers. they have tons of pci g4, agp g4s, and imac g3s.

i can confirm that the ram in the 3400 and 5300 in not compatable also, i ran OS9.1 on a PB 3400 (200mhz) w/ 16 mb ram, OS 8.1 should be fine w/ 24mb of ram.

try assembling it w/o the metal shield, I have not found it necessary,(on my 700mhz model—i have an aluminum shim on the graphics card, and all that happens is that the ibook gets hot) and it sounds like it might boot without it.

you can put the ibook into target disk mode, and use the sawtooth to clone from the sawtooth's HD

just clone your sawtooth's OS onto the ibook (assuming the sawtooth has tiger) using something like CCC. that should work at least as a temporary fix until you can fix everything the correct way. also, at least you are lucky enough to be able to resolder connections like that, if that happened...

just install tiger in a newer mac, and transport the HD over to the clamshell. this worked very well for me, i put the old hard drive from my pismo into a lombard (101), and it works fine, and i took the old hard drive from my newer key lime ibook and put it in a 300mhz ibook, and everything...

Did you take the pram battery out? That solved most of my Pismo problems.

THe 1.8GHZ does not have bad caps (anymore, they were replaced by apple, but yes, they are quite large). The only problem with it is that it was Kernel panicking, which i have not yet been able to make it do. i think that the culprit would more likely be a failing hdd (it is on it's first one)...

it is defiantly VGA, it works fine with all the computers i have attached it to, mac and pc.
