Inside the battery area is Black, and I see what you are talking about on the screen and the thing on the back. I'm starting to think that this may have just been a dye mod like you proposed earlier, I don't think it is painted b/c the case still has the same texture as a regular mac plus.

for the fan just use a fan from a laptop stand, those are meant to be run from usb (they probably already have the usb connector attached.) is not, firewire supplies 12volts, so you could use a fan powered off that.
