Hmm, I'm not exactly sure what to think of this.... try booting with the HD disconnected? It's possible the drive could have conked out and has a short.
Was it showing any other issues before this happened?
Nah, that paste is going to "smoosh" out so thin it won't even affect it. I did a test fit before reassembling mine, and it fit perfectly. The shim didn't slide around, nor was it too big.
Hmm... that's very weird. That computer never gave me a lick of trouble. In fact, I used it quite often and left it on for days. Did you try reseating the CPU card? I would do that and check the memory. I also read somewhere that a bad PRAM battery can cause weird things with these as well. I'd...
I didn't need a shim on the CPU. As seen in your pictures, the CPU is making contact with the heatsink, while the GPU isn't... it's evident because the compound isn't flattened like it is on the CPU side. The compound itself is the only thing that makes the GPU come in contact with the heatsink...
I don't garbage pick anymore. The scrappers are on it before you even see it. Oh, and many of them are armed. There's been stories of people being shot for picking in a scrapper's "territory".
Yeah, I always tear down any laptop I get to put Arctic Silver on the CPU/GPU to make them run cooler.
Ifixit.com is the site I used to pull mine apart... and since yours is the same as mine, I bookmarked the link -
Follow that, and be sure to sort the screws either by size or by how you...
Not to hijack your topic, but WHOO! I got my shim today, got it all back together and ran a few benchmarks in a row. Not a SINGLE TIME did the CPU or GPU temp get over 45*C. That is absolutely insane considering before I put the shim in, the GPU ran at 55-60*, and the CPU hovered at 50-55. I'm...
AMAZING. Assuming this thing was tossed out of a car window....The HD works perfectly. I just copied the whole drive to my MDD's drive. Not a single hiccup. Has 9.1 on it and a bunch of educational programs.
Nice find! Looks to be in good shape as well. Oh, and I see you use yours the same way I use my 12" AL PB..... Snes and Nes emulators. That's the good thing about the 12" models, they are easy to carry around and are good for little emulator machines.
So earlier I'm driving down the road, and I see something blue laying in a ditch. I drive by and then realize, HEY! Wait a minute.... that's an iMac! So I back up to where it was. Sure enough, a 233 Revision B iMac laying in a ditch, busted all to heck. So I picked it up and tossed it in the...
It should do fine with a gig. My 867 12" Aluminum G4 did fine with 640 in Tiger, but maxing it out to 1152mb really helped... it acts totally different.
Open it up and fix the GPU's heatsink problem....it's an inherent design flaw that Apple ignored by glopping thermal compound on the GPU so the heatsink made contact with it...over time the compound will eventually spread outward and will no longer make contact with the GPU, thus overheating it...
