Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

@Bolle firstly, sincere thanks for all your work and also thanks to everyone else who contributed. I have just assembled an SE/30 using one of your boards which I had made by JLCPCB. Everything went really well during assembly apart from a couple of issues. I'm wondering if these are somehow...

    Backwards progress with SE/30

I don't want to hijack the thread but I repaired a battery bombed SE/30 a little while back and everything works except I can't boot into system 6.0.8 without getting an error relating to "Responder" which I believe is an Appletalk extension. I also can't boot into 7.5.5 as it hangs during the...

    Backwards progress with SE/30

Thanks for the background on this. I read that article and I still find it a bit baffling why this might help fix simasimac but I understand why you gave it a try. I'm not aware of any data sheets for those sound chips so hard to be sure what those pins actually do beyond basic assumptions. I...

    Backwards progress with SE/30

Hi - a few thoughts: I see signs of solder balls or other debris in the close-ups. Is it possible that you dislodged a piece of solder when cleaning and it has now shorted something unrelated to the recapping? Maybe try a thorough cleaning of the whole board, maybe even with water/windex etc as...

    Sourcing Apple Custom IC's

Thanks Kai, that's very useful. Even though the package in the data sheet is different to the 8 pin DIL on the SE & SE/30, the functionality appears to be the same. Nice!(y)

    Sourcing Apple Custom IC's

Thanks for that Scott, very much appreciated. I've been looking out for a data sheet for the Apple RTC chip but could never find one. It certainly occurred to me that it should be possible to reverse engineer the chip but without knowing how it works that seemed difficult. Looks like most of the...

    Sourcing Apple Custom IC's

Hi, I'm also looking for at least one, ideally two 3440042B RTC chips for the SE/30. I've sent a fresh inquiry to utsource but sounds like I'll get told the same as others that they are not available. I'm based in Scotland but happy to cover international postage. Many thanks, Craig.

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Another quick update: Since my last update I’ve not had a lot of time to work on the SE/30 but in the last few days I have replaced some of the chips including the 8530 serial controller (UG12) and one of the 26LS30 driver chips (UD12) which didn’t seem to be behaving correctly electrically and...

Any hope for this SE/30 mb?

Hi, I'm in the (hopefully) final stages of repairing a much worse battery-bombed SE/30 which another member described as "battery-nuked"! o_O Have a look here and see what you think. https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/battery-bombed-se-30-logic-board-can-it-be-saved.38518/post-419967...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Quick update: So I buzzed out the 8530 serial controller and found a broken PCB trace for A2 which I was confident must be the problem. A2 was one of the traces I had to repair between the CPU and ROM in order to get the machine to boot. Unfortunately after repairing the trace and powering the...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

I couldn't wait until this evening... 😅 Well whad'ya know - it locks up at "Modem Test" after passing all the previous tests. Initially I got a bad keyboard and bad RAM error when running Snooper in 6.0.8 but when run in 7.1 from the ROM Disk, it passes these tests. I did notice on Macintosh...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Hi Bruce, that's an excellent suggestion because I think the serial ports are just about the only subsystem I've not been able to test either directly or indirectly. I did do a search for diagnostics software previously but never found Snooper. I'll certainly give that a try this evening...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Thanks for that suggestion but I can't see anything of that name in my list of extensions. I have also tried booting with extensions disabled (hold down shift during boot) and that yields the same result. By the way, this exact 7.5.5 image boots fine in Basilisk where it was originally prepared...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Another quick update: I tried swapping over the RTC chip from my working SE but that did not help. I also tried disabling the FPU by desoldering the chip select pin and pulling it up to 5V but that just caused a system error on boot up. I also received a ROM-inator Atom from BMOW since my...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

By the way, I just realised a short time after my last post that @brayne is Bruce from Branchus Creations on YouTube and he has a bunch of videos on SE/30 and other repairs. I looked through a few of these to try to find one that mentioned the FPU but couldn't find any. These are multi-hour live...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Thanks, this is something that came up on Joe's Computer Museum channel on YouTube where he was fixing an SE/30 and is what led me to buzz out all the FPU connections. You can disable the FPU by disconnecting the chip select line. I was reluctant to try that as it involves desoldering the pin on...

SE FDHD ejects boot disks, won't acknowledge SCSI2SD

Sorry for the delay in replying - looks like I didn't have email notifications set up for forum replies. I'm talking about the hard drive images for SCSI2SD not floppy images. It describes them here ( https://www.savagetaylor.com/downloads/downloads-macintosh/ ) in section 2.1 and 2.2 but...

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

I just wanted to add some more findings to the above. I can successfully boot 6.0.3 and once booted I can pull down menus, use Finder and Control Panel etc without issues. I can also access the floppy drive and hard drive without issues. During the first boot on 6.0.3 (disk image prepared via...

SE FDHD ejects boot disks, won't acknowledge SCSI2SD

One thing I wanted to mention about the SCSI2SD disk images you created based on images from savagetaylor - are you aware of the difference between "volume" images and "disk" images? You seem pretty clued up so I'm sure you probably do but just checking you are using disk images.

SE/30 Boot Process - stuck at ~15% on progress bar. How to debug?

Hi, I'm in the process of repairing a battery bombed SE/30 and have managed to repair enough of the PCB traces and vias to get it booting up partially. I'm using a SCSI2SD device with a bootable 7.5.5 system installed and it gives me the startup chime, happy Mac, "Welcome to Macintosh" and then...
