If you're planning to keep the machine for a long time then you need to have a spare PSU since the MDD PSU's have a poor reputation. Unfortunately, they are not cheap. I haven't looked at eBay for a while but about a year ago the cheapest you could find one was about $70.
Just picked up an Aluminum G4 Powerbook, 1.5GHz, 1GB Ram, 80GB HD, with Apple charger and a new battery (5 cycles). My first laptop (I know, WAAY behind the times) so I'm kind of excited by it.
Yeah, my copy of Retrospect says it will work with the drive but when I tried it nothing happened. It's been a while though so maybe it's time to play with it some more.
Slightly off topic, but I have an APS DAT drive that came with a 9500 several years ago. I've never been able to find drivers for the device, so if anyone has an applicable Sys 9 driver they're willing to share I would be grateful.
It does not appear to be a heat issue; temp monitor and iStat both show that the CPU temp almost never goes above 130 degrees F. The internal red LED's don't always come on after a KP but when they do it's 1 or 2 as I recall. The only info I have about that from Apple docs says "Contact a...
The machine in question is a late 2005 2.3GHz Dual core G5 with 6GB of Ram.
It keeps doing random KP's after varying intervals of operation. It doesn't always give me a report but when it does it's things like "Empty mapping block" or "Unresolved Kernel Trap 0x400 Inst Access".
I've...
Quite a dramatic speed boost from 10.01 to 10.0.2pre:
Sunspider results on a G5 Quad with speed at highest.
FFx 10.0.1 1005.4ms.....10.0.2pre 862.3ms
Great work everyone!
I second that. The 16/600 takes cheap HP cartridges (under $40 online), but it is a bit of a large beast, and as Beachy says, it's not the quietest. However, Ram is not too difficult to find and you can install an SCSI HD for more storage.
I don't know anything about removing the CPU heatsinks, but disassembling the G5 is straight forward. You need a long Torx (T2 as I recall) to remove the CPU modules and the various cable connectors seem to be a bit delicate but with care there should be no problems.
The Apple Service...
I have a somewhat similar issue with my DC 2.3 G5, ie, occasional KP's. TechTool Supreme detects no problem with the CPU or Ram. I've tried ASD 2.5.8 but of course that version does not work on the DC machines.
So, does anyone have ASD 2.6.3? I've Googled it and there are versions out...
Count me as someone who also really likes the 8600 (and the 9600). My 8600/300 with the stock 604ev card has been rock solid running 9.1. It has the standard floppy, CD, and Zip 100 drives, along with 3 HD's. There's an Adaptec 2940U2B SCSI card driving 36GB 15K RPM and 9GB 10K RPM HD's...
I have not been able to find much relevant info about speakers for G5 towers. What speakers out there work with the G5 towers (late 2005 DC models)? Not looking for super high fidelity, just a pair better than the lousy built in speaker that will do a decent job of music reproduction.
