Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
@johnklos ad 1: I am aware this is used in modern processors tweaking their clock speed, but did not know this works with old processors too. I always thought they are phase optimized for a frequency on a deep hardware level.
But what makes me wonder is why this isn't true for many RAM modules...
As previously mentioned in this thread, there are several versions of Dark Castle available. Newer ones even run under System 9.
Earlier expect the memory layout of the original Macintosh which was carried over until the Mac SE, I think, (possibly also the original Classic) but was changed with...
@jimbojones Are you saying that a MC68882 labeled as 40 MHz works with 16? Interesting.
I bought and installed a FPU advertised as 16 MHz in 1992 (roughly ~ 100 US$ then) into my original LC (very similar to a CC). I don't know about other manufacturers at that time but speaking about Macs the...
@cheesestraws Thank you for clarifying this matter. My remarks are solely based on empirical try and error but compromised by nearly two decades of memory blurring.
My setup was used as a back up station in the early 2000s. Second hand SCSI-CD burners had become really cheap then and often were...
I'll try a walkthrough of the whole process.
There may be two problems to get around:
1. compatibility of the Dark Castle game itself
2. compatibility of the System Folder of your game disk.
1: Early game versions are designed for compact 68000 Macs (think MacPlus) but may or may not run on...
Another connection example:
To connect an old Performa 475 (Asanté PDS card, RJ45 @ 10 Mbit, card produced in 1990) with an tangerine iBook (2000) I had to use a (very cheap, 12 € new) 10 Mbit Ethernet hub in between. The Ur-iBook has 100/10 Mbit Ether. This gave me over 700 kB/s copy speed...
I just very recently learned that both soldered ROMs and a ROM socket can coexist on some boards. Probably the jumpers mentioned in the support PDF of BMOW (see my previous posting) take care of this.
Yep. I recently complaint to a blogger who deprived his little IIsi of his ROM for upgrading...
A picture-search on Google for "Mac iisi logicboard" gives lots of examples to compare. A quick look gives me the impression that most boards have a socketed ROM, one site mentions a soldered one. (Example: https://www.bigmessowires.com/romdrv/rominatorii-instructions.pdf ) This hints that you...
@Crutch Mind I wrote "arguably" which is what we are doing now. I am referring to the Apple Studio Display 15" flat panel.
Pros:
genuine Apple
small size
various connection options: VGA, original Mac II-style (adapter originally included if I understand this correctly)
pre ADC (so...
Thanks goodness a Tadiran PRAM battery was used. The most reliable brand and least prone to leaking.
@jessenatorEvery Mac ROM from the IIci (September 1989) on was 32-bit clean, so also the IIfx (March 1990) and the IIsi (late 1990).
This MIT document refers not specifically to 32-bit...
I spot an eMate 300 in the background, another favorite of mine I still didn't manage to aquire.
The 15" Ur-Apple Studio Display is arguably the finest Apple flat display option for old Mac II/LC-era Macs. However the 640x480 resolution is not native to the panel therefore not perfectly sharp...
Some late comments.
First: What a wonderful setup, and what a beautiful presentation! I am really jealous.
Beware of the L-shaped PowerBook-SCSI-adaptors (third party). They seem handy allowing to be switched between attachment of SCSI-devices and target-disk mode of the internal hard disk...
I faintly remember having had same error messages back in the old days.
I cured it with increasing the preferred memory setting for an application. I suggest giving fetch 1.5 MB or so.
However, this may be more effective when switching off virtual memory - as nearly every pro user did in...
Sorry for continuing something off topic:
My January 1991 LC came with a screw. But my girlfriend's May 1991 model did not have one. So I think they ditched it around this time, probably depending on production plant. In a public/lab situation it offers some protection from someone stealing...
Thank you trag for the in-depth explanation, even when I'm missing the knowledge necessary to follow it. At least it became clear to me, that IIfx-RAM is proprietary but recreatable.
However, I cannot think about many applications where you would need more than 32 MB RAM (using 8 pcs of 4 MB...
Is Mac IIfx and LaserWriter RAM proprietary indeed? Not some sort of relatively uncommon but still standard RAM?
Does anybody have knowledge about this?
Early PowerBooks do suffer from this proprietory RAM issue, or more exactly their users were/are suffering. In the late 1990s I payed about...
I think the main difference between 1.x versions is compatibility with (what was then) newer Macs and later Mac System versions. Probably there are releases for unification of the code base, since SimCity was available on so many platforms. I don't remeber big differences, however cannot say...
Hopefully I don't annoy anybody since I can't answer directly to your questions. But I have worked with/on IIfxes in the early 1990s.
I always prefer original sources, which means Apple in this case. Apple's Memory Guide:
https://www.macintoshrepository.org/24780-apple-memory-guide
states (p...
I have to correct myself. Memory tends to make the past better then it was. For example here the refresh rate of the original Apple High-Resolution RGB Monitor and related displays at 640x480. The original specs sheet reads:
Scan rates: 35.0 kilohertz horizontal, 66.7 hertz vertical
Original...
