i don't have a laptop but i can tell you that if you are only going to do text editing or things like that, on my 450mhz G4 desktop OS 9 is very fast for things like that.....also for games to..........
actually the fix was the easiest thing ever.....the metal tab that is use to push down the on/off button on the bottom near the optical sensor was squished down!!!! a little bending and its working fine now :)
mouse update:
i found out something strange.....if you hold down the mouse button while its off and the light turns on then you open the cover then the connection comes back!!! but there a catch you have to continue to hold down the mouse button for the connection to remain :p if you let go...

the problem that I'm having is:
1) there is an apple wireless mouse model number A1015 that is paired and it dosen't work, when you push the cover back on the mouse to power it on it blinks...

I would like to use a hub so i can hide it and so if i get some more of my macs on the network i can just add them in
as for my G3 and G4 i don't know if they do or don't, ill see if I can find out
I am familiar with basic home networking, but the networking that I have done is under OS X...
i have in the past added macs to existing networks but never created one from scratch, here are the things that i get to work with:

2 patch cords
2 t-base 10 hubs
lets just say that this is Macintosh Networking for Dummies
well today i got a new computer.....its a G4 "SawTooth"!!!!! here are the specs:
450mhz G4
768mb of ram
18gb hd
and it will soon be running 9.2.2 or mac os x server :beige:
the best mouse that i have used.....hmmmmm.....id say its the acer optical mouse that i got from our computer downstairs (yes we have a pc in the house 8-o ) when we got a new one.
