Hello !
I'm looking at an auction for a Powerbook "PDQ" modelID312,
It's the full spec 192MB RAM, 8GB HD, etc.
Apple site says this model accepts maximum 192MB
https://support.apple.com/kb/sp128?locale=fr_FR
It's also written 192MB on the pack of the unit.
However, there's another auction...
Well first of, I really have to apologize for not being a macintosh power user ; I know it's bizarre to be able to revive vintage laptops and own half a dozen of them in running state, while still being such a software newbie. Let me explain :) While people were using system7 I was using msdos...
And I'm here again one year later, still with the same problem for another Mac...
Maybe someone has a new idea or a method that wasn't discussed ?
Basically, how to produce System7 system floppies (701, 753, etc) from a modern PC (windows 11, usb drive)
Also, it's becoming difficult to find a...
Yes so we all agree this is a factory fix, not a recall, which was one of my questions
I'll carefully check the two motherbaords I have to figure out if , maybe, they are two revision and the one without the fix maybe has those pullup resistors on the PCB
Or if they have the same revision, in...
I now have two powerbook 100, the first one has been recapped, etc, and is doing good.
The new one is currently undergoing the same repairs.
However, now that I have two, I noticed that my first one has not only a relatively rare ram expansion, but it has somekind of a "mod" that looks stock...
I don't know how the folks who do this can propose such a service , and I respect the very much for proposing it.
Even if I invoiced the lowest hourly rate in my country, the time this takes plus the price of quality parts would make a recap way more expensive than two second hand PB100...
Do you believe me if I tell you that since posting this I have bought no less than two other vintage computers all needing repair
Is there like an AA for vintage enthusiasts to share their problems buying useless junk ? :)
Joke apart the parts are in, this is my next next project.
hello everyone ,
i happen to have a sup’r’terminal 80 columns card for my apple 2
it comes with a small socket to put on top of one of the chips and I fixed some bad solder joints .
Even after plugging it in in the right way ; with the little cable to the chip connected on the motherboard ...
I just got a new PB100 today, of course it does not start and has leaky caps.
So i'll recap a PB100 once again.:)
I've been lookin for one since a long time, as I've got a perfectly working one (recapped, bluescsi, etc) but it had red dead pixels due to trackball impact
This new PB100 I...
Hey thanks to your post I just realized one of the things I fixed in the past is called "vinegar syndrome" !
Didn't know this had a name. The polariser seemed to be glued to the glass, I had to remove it entirely and replace it with something else.
It is very frustrating for us laptop owners.
Of course I realize some things just don't live forever, but if so these 1x0 laptops will be impossible to power on with the built in display in the next 5 years.
When you say reduce , for how long ? How long does it take for tunnel vission to come back as compared to before ?
Can you give more details ?
Again it just seems that once dried out, something has to be resealed again (with glue or anything else) so that this problem disappears for good...
If this is a moisture ingress issue, it's surprising nobody tested sealing the screen (with like silicone or something like that)
It would probably solve the problem ocne and for all on affected screens.
I'm affected but my units are in way too good cosmetic shape for me to risk anything on...
The backlight is suspiciously dim ; although some say it was like that back in the day . It’s usable unless you’re in bright sunlight ; which would have been unusual in 1996 :)
CCFL is certainly something I’ll try to keep spares of , or replacement techniques .
@Juror22 I’m afraid to tell you my libretto 50ct is in a mint condition ; it was again from the original owner who was of the autistic type ( like most of us ? :) ) and took great care of the thing ( you should have seen the package he sent ! )
It’s fully functional, battery still holds charge...
It's years of collecting... And not always successes, some of my buys ended up in the trash or sold "for display" as they were beyond repair.
Laptops are usually very hard to repair (everything is fragile, the components, the hinges, the plastic, everything !) , they are all subject to battery...
I don't have much space in my home. ;(
I like vintage computing...
The solution !
So I only repair vintage laptops, I knew none of them back in the day (they were waaay too pricey and mostly most CEOs !) but now I'm rather proud of my little collection.
Starting right to left :
The black...
