Oh, I think I get it. I would have to boot to the floppy emu or something I guess to be able to overwrite the system folder on what would otherwise be the boot volume.
Oh jeez. The stock 475 for some reason isn't honoring the shift-option-command-delete-4 command to boot off the CD-ROM drive at SCSI ID 4. The other one did it just fine.
Anyways, I think I figured it out. I booted off the 8.1 disk tools image that comes with the Floppy Emu and then ran the...
Okay, WishiWere solved one problem but now I have another. I get the installer going, and it is about to install, and then it tells me I don't have enough space to install. I think the problem is that I have 7.1 installed on a 4GB partition. That is all I could previously get to install. But...
I tried command, option, and command option, when running the Install MacOS program off the 7.6 CD and it didn't help. I just keep getting the message "This Program does not run on this computer model."
I'm gonna try WishiWere next.
For some reason my overclocked 475 with a full 040 is being rejected by all the installation media I've tried.
I have an OS 7.6 CD and that gets rejected with "This program does not run on this computer model".
I tried the system 7.5 installation floppy image that came with the Floppy Emu...
Okay, that's strange. I rebooted again after (only) increasing the disk cache size and the higher resolution came back.
Strange.
Gonna do a fresh install onto a SCSI2SD for this one.
Hmm. Turning on 32 bit addressing created a new problem. Now the Monitors control panel will only do 640x480, whereas under 24 bit addressing, it allowed me to to 1172x870 (or something like that).
Any ideas on that one?
Ah. ha ha ha. SE/30 says it all.
This is going to be one of my favorite machines:
- As fast as a Q650 with co-processor / full 040.
- 128MB RAM
- SCSI2SD
- 1MB VRAM for a pretty nice resolution at 256 colors.
I've got LC PDS ethernet cards for it too.
What the heck is going on here?
I have an LC 475, a full 040 overclocked to 33MHz I got from eBay / MacCaps. Not sure if that is germane.
I booted it up using a SCSI2SD unit I had copied off my SE/30. With nothing running, the system software is taking up 130MB.
If I disable extensions and...
Yes, there are. I have one.
I believe a 1.44 Apple Superdrive can read and write 400k disks too. But other ones like the Imation drives for G3 iMacs can't read or write 400k disks. I use a Superdrive in an 800k housing for my Applesauce (which can't yet read 1.44 capacity disks) and it can...
Well, in defense of the current prices for the 800k variety, the 1.44MB external drives are usually priced around $300, which is silly, because you can just swap the mechanism and get the same thing for a lot less.
Here is a couple of more reasonably priced external drives on eBay, both presently $30 bit and $15 shipping.

I've been buying the Dell 2001FP LCD monitors lately. They support up to 1600x1200 and seem to work with a wide range of vintage Macs. They have VGA, DVI, RCA, and SVIDEO inputs. I seem to pay about $75 shipped for them.
@dcr here is a promising 3.5" drive on eBay:

Current.y $24 bit with $11.21 shipping.
It's 800k but you can easily swap in a 1.44 drive to the...
