Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
P1 & P2 are the connections to the ST-506 hard drive.
I can't remember what the Molex power connector was for (haven't seen a HyperDrive in a Mac for well over 15 years now!), but since the inside of the socket isn't dusty, it must have had a plug in it when it was in the Mac. As an...
I've put the picture on photobucket, but their system has applied fairly heavy compression. If it's not clear enough, I can e-mail you a less compressed version:
Charlieman: that's interesting, I didn't know they made one for the Mac Plus - I only ever came across what I guess is the second...
I wouldn't have thought they were that rare or valuable, although I guess there aren't many left in working order.
If I recall correctly, the Hyperdrive was rather unusual for a third party product, in that it:
a) required internal modifications to the Mac
B) didn't void warranty!
The...
Most of the higher capacity RAM expansion cards for the Mac Portables were 8MB PDS cards. In the backlit Portable, the top 1MB is simply never decoded and so doesn't get used. I guess that something else is occupying memory at that address.
The backlit Mac Portable has no contrast control for the display, but I think the original, non-backlit Portable may have had a contrast adjustment.
The backlight brightness is adjusted using a "Brightness" Apple menu Item under System 7. You can set up a keyboard shortcut (eg and up arrow /...
As others have said - no, at least not here In Australia where the Mac Plus came only as a 1MB machine. It was up to the dealer to increase the memory if the end user wanted more.
Having cracked open a great many Mac Plus' in the day, I can tell you that with practice you can "feel" if they've...
For desktops:
1. Optical mouse of just about any type, except the awful iMac style "iPuck" (what were Apple thinking!).
2. Ball Mouse. The Apple ADB ones with the larger, much heavier gray ball were excellent. Can't stand the old Apple ADB mouses with the really light, small black ball...
Still running Word 5.1 / Excel 4.0 under 7.1 on my old Portable. It's a refreshing change from the current MS bloatware - anyone used Office 2007 yet? Ewww.
The old Kingston(?) ADB trackballs for the Mac
That funny scanner add-on for the ImageWriter - the "scanner" dropped in in place of the printer ribbon and scanned the page (badly) in bands. I think it was called "Thunder Scan" or something like that. Quite ingenious and popular in the day...
I could always chuck my old hard drive back in and do some tests. Since the "old" drive was not the original Conner 3.5"/20MB drive but a later model 2.5"/80MB drive, the tests may not be valid for people with standard Mac Portables though.
The type of CompactFlash used would also affect the...
It's an EtherRoute TCP made by "Compatible Systems". It encapsulates TCP/IP in AppleTalk packets, so you can use old Macs as telnet / SSH terminals, check your e-mail and so on.
The "pirate" cartridge could be faulty. You might like to try sitting it on a damp paper towel for a while in case the nozzles are blocked (hint - put it in a laundry tub or a bucket - it might stain the surface the paper is on).
I once had a "Frankenstein" StyleWriter I... in other words, I...
The Apple disk formatting tool does not recognise the compact flash (no surprise there). Silverlining formats it ok, but the Mac Portable is a bit picky about which version of it you use.
Strangely enough the CompactFlash card had already been used in the ACard adaptor and just booted up in...
Almost silent. There's a bit of noise still from the backlight inverter. With 8MB of RAM and a LocalTalk to Ethernet router (does TCP/IP), it's still quite a useful machine.
I've installed one of the PowerMonster CompactFlash to 2.5" SCSI adaptors into my Mac Portable. It uses a cable I made up years ago to go to the proprietary Mac Portable motherboard socket.
So quiet...
The old 2.5" drive was starting to suffer from sticktion and was pretty noisy.
[EDIT] I...
I don't have a cable, but consulting my 1988 copy of the Apple Peripheral Interface Guide, the only DE-9 Male to DE-9 Male cable is the 590-0197.
"Used to connect the following devices: Macintosh to a Modem 300 or Modem 1200"
Cable is wired as follows:
DE-9 Male---DE-9 Male
3 & 8---3...
The board looks like an interface for a Kodak/Sayett DataShow projector pad - I installed quite a few of them in Mac SEs and SE/30s in the day.
The DataShow was basically an LCD display panel in a box with a glass window on both sides. It was placed on top of a standard overhead projector to...
Like the Mac Portable, the PowerBook 100 won't start its hard drive reliably unless it has a good battery.
I don't know why it won't boot from a floppy though - maybe the floppy disk drive is faulty? It needs at least System 6.0.8 to boot, from memory.
