I remember throwing a heap of those self-paced training videos out about 10 years ago. I still have the certificates for successfully completing the "self-track" courses. (You took a computer based test at the end and sent it off to Apple to prove that you had understood the content on the...
If you've never done any soldering before, I suggest you practice on an old junk board before taking to your Mac Plus board. It's very easy to apply too much heat for too long and end up cooking the copper tracks off the board.
One of the pins on that connector looks like it has been really...
What sort of state is the Mac Portable battery in?
The Mac Portable absolutely needs a good battery installed before the hard drive will spin up. This is because the AC Adaptor alone cannot produce enough power to reliably start the hard drive spinning. If the battery is not present, or has...
You have to take the back off, I'm afraid.
If you've never done this, there are two screws underneath and a pair of internal plastic clips at the top. You push down on the top / front part of the case about an inch in from each side to release the plastic clips. It's hard to describe -...
Back in the day, both the Mac II and Mac IIx machines were exceptionally reliable - in my experience, anyway. The only common problems were the PRAM batteries going flat (and then the machine wouldn't power on) and floppy drives filling up with dust. Apple later made an add-on clear plastic...
Nice find.
The reviewer missed one difference between the LC475 and Quadra 605: the Quadra 605 came with a PDS ethernet card fitted (at least in Australia, anyway). The only difference between the two motherboards was the position of a single jumper, so that "About this Macintosh" correctly...
Most likely a defective photo-sensitive drum in the toner, however depending on the appearance of the print defect, it may be a damaged/worn fuser roller in the printer.
Measure the distance between the blotches - this will give you the circumference of the drum or roller making the mark. A...
I remember this being a common problem back when 800k disks were popular. We concluded that sometimes some critical piece of data on the disk gets corrupted and Macs refuse to touch the disk afterwards.
The solutions we used with great success were to either:
a) hit the disk with a bulk tape...
One reason to shut a hard drive equipped machine down properly that I don't think has been mentioned...
It takes a bit longer for the Mac to boot up the next time if you didn't shut down properly.
When the Mac mounts a hard drive, it sets a "dirty volume" bit on the hard disk. If you shut...

In the day, the 12" RGB was the "cheap" monitor, versus the "good" monitors, which were the 13" / 14" displays - both of which used the same Sony CRT (yes - even though Apple's marketing people claimed one was an inch bigger). The unconventional resolution was a big problem and the dot...
I have to admit IBM (and Lenovo, by extension) have always made terrific keyboards. I guess it comes from selling electric typewriters for so many years. I prefer typing on my 10 year old ThinkPad 600 to just about any modern notebook I've used (haven't tried a T61). In addition to excellent...
IIRC beachycove is right. The printer should auto-switch between localtalk and parallel without any problems. They also switch between PCL and PostScript transparently, so you are all set.
Does the disk crash mean you need to get another copy of the ROMs for a later model backlit Portable (the factory fitted backlight, not the upgrade for the orginal Portable)?
The old 400k drives are notorious for having the grease gum up the eject mechanism. Usually if/when this happens, you'll find that applying constant pressure with the paper clip will result in the eject mechanism slowly releasing the disk.
Whether the disk can be removed this way or not, the...
If the IIci was still around, then it makes sense for the IIvx to have been deliberately crippled as a marketing decision. The Centris 650 would later have replaced the IIci. At the time, Apple were in their phase of trying to have a model to suit every niche.
Of the Apple mouses for older Macs, I like any of the "grey ball" ADB II Mouses. The grey balls were nice and heavy and generally tracked well, even when not cleaned regularly. A really nice (though little known) design feature was the locking mechanism for schools. There's a tiny little hole...
Agreed. I thought I was the only person who liked these keyboards enough to still have (and use) one, but have recently discovered that they have quite a following. Nice, positive tactile feedback and built like a truck.
