Messing around, found a way to start the installation of 7.5.3 (with 7.0.1 running the machine), even though the installer stated it didn't support the machine, using custom install.
If this works, will post its success. If it mucks things up, then wiping and reinstalling 7.0.1 will be easy.
Hmmm, well only 7.5.3 is available from Apple for full download, so if I need 7.5 to get there it might be a show-stopper.
Still, 7.01 appears to be working fine right now. Just need to find a browser that will fit on a 1.44 FDD and get my Classic II back online.
Regarding OS 6.0.8, put the startup disk for that in and my Classic II, and I got the following message:
"This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest Installer to update this disk for this model. (System 6.08 does not work on this model; you need a newer version...
Thanks for the link. Am now faced with a new challenge: Can boot up with System 7.0 disks and install the system software on the machine.
Am unable to do the same with System 7.5.3 - the machine says it cannot install that system software for some reason, nor can I upgrade to System 7.5.3...
Okay, after more searching, found out that the popular Disk Tools 1 and Disk Tools 2 do not work with anything earlier than a 68040, my Classic II being a 68030.
So, found, downloaded, and burned the disks for System 6 ... and my Macintosh spit it out without hesitation and booted to the HD...
Okay, can't mess that up, and do have a multimeter.
Before that (and the possibility of electrocuting myself through my own ignorance), will see if I can't find the 7.5.3 Disk Tools.
Edit: Found this, which showed downloads for Disk Tools 1 and Disk Tools 2, both of which I've already got...
Have not checked the voltage on the analog board, but would be willing to try - keeping in mind that I know as much about checking such things as I do writing a dissertation on Astrophysics.
Again, sent off the logic board to get recapped, but not the analog board. Not really excited about...
Thanks for the recommendation - will look into that.
When the Classic II is booting from the Disk Tools disks, it recognizes that they're system disks, but it gives the message that they're the wrong disks for that system. Wondering if there is an earlier version than Disk Tools 1.
Think it's...
When I put them in the PowerBook (from the Classic II, after it "erases" them), it can no longer read them - has to initialize them again. It can do so, and it can then re-image Disk Tools 1 and Disk Tools 2. Can boot the PowerBook with Disk Tools 2, though not with Disk Tools 1. It does read...
Okay!
Have a recapped main board, and am still getting the same message with either disk drive (got another to swap out in case the drive was going bad). In fact, once the computer starts up on HD, the disks aren't even readable (wants to initialize them), and think it's ruining perfectly-good...
Picked up an Apple CD 300e Plus off of either eBay or Amazon (don't quite recall) for $30 a couple of weeks ago.
Came with a bonus too: CD of Office 98. Using all 1s unlocked the CD key, and so now have MS Office on my PowerBook.
Will use the Apple CD 300e Plus for my Classic II (once I get...
Thanks for the WARNO. Will avoid that one.
Am running Mac OS 8.1 on my 3400c. Hopefully, I can still make a wireless PC card work with it. As of now, have connectivity through the LAN cable, but would be nice to free that up for my Classic II, once I get the main board back.
Of course, the...
Sorry to resurrect this ancient thread, but recently picked up a PowerBook 3400c, and am looking to get a wireless PC card for it.
Does anyone know what wireless PC cards would work on a 3400c?
For those interested (or those building the Wiki) here is the main-board for my Macintosh Classic II, which differs from the usual (mine is a 1993 model with left side speaker).
Waiting on the caps to arrive, probably late next week. Then I'll send them off with the mainboard to the cat who will replace them. Figure I'll have it ready for battle after Christmas.
Of course, there's no guarantee that replacing the caps will fix my FDD issue. :-/
Do have a PowerMac...
Okay, here is what I found. What you see is what I found printed on each capacitor. All the "2 10 16V" caps had what looked like a rectangle in front of them:
Thanks. Someone did indeed offer to recap the board for me. Apparently, mine isn't the usual Classic II board, but rather a later version with more caps than the first version.
