Wrapped / sheathed 20-pin IDC ribbon cables? Easy or tedious DIY?

I have a FloppyEmu and it has a flat 20-pin IDC ribbon cable. I don't love using a cable like this outside of a computer and would prefer using one that has been sheathed, or wrapped, in some kind of rubber. When I used to build PCs in the late 90s - mid-2000s, I bought most of my parts on...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

Yeah, the magnet plate is a real bitch to remove. That's why I used two flathead screwdrivers placed opposite each other, and levered them slightly away from the head and platters to avoid causing damage. When you set it back down, it might seem like it snapped into place really firmly, but...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

LOL, the brain sees what it wants to see. Here's a close up section all stretched out. I think it says "OBEY" 🤣 or maybe just "OOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

AHA. I figured out what kind of tape this is: Roberts Seam Guard Underlayment Tape https://www.homedepot.com/p/ROBERTS-Seam-Guard-1-7-8-in-x-100-ft-x-0-005-in-Underlayment-Tape-Roll-50-040/300588264 Why do I have this, you ask? Because when we bought our house at the beginning of the...

MacEffects Performer PDS 68030 - My Review

I have booted the SE without the extension on System 7.1, and it runs like a regular SE. No obvious issues.

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

Thanks! Here's a couple of photos of the roll of tape. I forget what brand or model it is, and the interior of the roll has no markings. The only distinguishing features are the ribbing, and the way it stayed deformed when stretched. You can see a very fine "grid" in the red. The adhesive...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

Ah, I thought the 1" tall drives were the "half height" ones. TIL. Anyway, this drive is a lot quieter than the shorter hard drives that Apple started using in the LC-series Macs and the Mac Classic II. The motor in the smaller 3.5" Quantum LPS hard drives produces a lot more unpleasant...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

I would have posted my review of the MacEffects 68030 PDS accelerator for the Mac SE on Friday when it arrived, but my hard drive went on the fritz. Prior to installing the card, I ran MacBench with all the hard drive benchmarks, then shut down the SE and installed the card. On the next boot...

    Mac Plus/SE Performer accelerator build

Are you the team that sold the new 68030 PDS card on MacEffects? I just got my production card and installed it in my SE this weekend. It works great so far!

MacEffects Performer PDS 68030 - My Review

I forgot to mention that my Macintosh SE has System 7.1 installed. Since the SE has 4MB of RAM, I could technically run System 7.5, but I won't. In photo #3 (the underside of the card), you can probably see some damage on the PDS connector: rough-looking corners on both ends, and a hairline...

MacEffects Performer PDS 68030 - My Review

I found out about this accelerator from the Captain's Quarters II BBS. Installation was a cinch on my SE FDHD Superdrive 40MB. You can boot the Mac without the MicroMac Performer extension, and it runs just fine as a regular SE with the 68000 CPU. after the first boot with the extension...

    bin/cue Mounting under OS9

Ahem: the original CD release of Half Life had audio tracks. The dark ambient soundtrack was amazing. Modern releases of Half Life delivered via Steam include the soundtrack and play as digital audio. Mounting the Red Book audio session is only half the problem; you also need an app or...

    bin/cue Mounting under OS9

MacOS 9 has no facility to do this because it cannot playback the audio digitally. Your only option was analog audio directly from the inserted disc. Astarte / Adaptec Toast has a virtual CD mounter, and there's a third party utility called "Virtual DVD-ROM/CD Utility" that runs great on both...

    Beige G3 Strange Issues

Just bumping an old thread. This keyboard shortcut worked for me on a beige PowerMac G3 with 768 MB of RAM. It cut the chime-to-gray time from 2 minutes down to 15 seconds. When you hear the chime, count "one-mississippi, two-mississippi, three-mississippi," then press Ctrl-Cmd-Reset. It...

Beige G3 chimes with no picture for a long time before showing grey screen and booting MacOS. Black screen duration is proportional to installed RAM.

Ok, so now I really want to know why this trick works and skips the RAM test: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/beige-g3-strange-issues.31644/post-337746 In my testing just now, I only had to wait about 1 second after the chime was inaudible before pressing ctrl-cmd-reset, and boom ...

Beige G3 chimes with no picture for a long time before showing grey screen and booting MacOS. Black screen duration is proportional to installed RAM.

I have a beige G3 233MHz (Rev A? ROM $77D.40F2) that I picked up from someone locally. It had 96 MB of RAM, so I decided to upgrade it and install OS 9.0.4. When it has less RAM, the computer chimes and shows a black screen for maybe 10 seconds before going gray, then showing the happy Mac...

PCI Card Compatibility with OS9, USB/FW Combo, Ethernet, Other

@cobalt60: I just ordered the USB/FW combo card from the eBay auction you listed. They still have plenty available. At $7 apiece, it was certainly worth the risk if it did't work. I installed this PCI card in a PowerMac G3 beige running MacOS 9.0.4. The card did not work until I...

    LC3 overclock and custom cooling

After over clocking my LC III, I added a heatsink to the 68030. No extra fan. It is running just fine. The temperature is about 130-140°F on the heatsink. I have put it through a battery of the Speedometer benchmarks without any issues.
