Just throwing out an idea here:
There's always been a lot of discussion about multi-tasking on the Apple II which generally doesn't go very far... I think the reason for that there are very few practical applications for it and the resources of the Apple II are somewhat lacking.
How about...
Just out of curiosity, what are you mainly using it for? I've just won a 2.0 GHz dual G5 on eBay that will replace my 700MHz eMac for graphics (and a bit of audio/video)... I'm anticipating a noticeable difference ;-)
I have the Apple AV cable and I can confirm that the plug is slightly longer than normal and has 4 contacts... I'd guess it has to be since the jack on the clamshell supports a standard 1/8" stereo plug for headphones. Presumably the tip of the plug carries the video signal.
The port on the IIc is only physically the same, AFAIK it won't work with much other than the mono LCDs that were available for the IIc.
It's worth noting that while the RF adapter uses an RCA cable, it doesn't output a composite video signal like you would use on a modern TV or Apple II...
I'm looking at going this route too... I'm actually planning on getting a pair of Dual G5s so I can have a full data and hardware backup. Even with a decent (non-Apple) monitor and a KVM it will come in cheaper than a new low-end iMac.
Right now a G5 tower is about 10% - 15% of the cost of a...
I don't know if it's a case of too many contestants or too few voters, but we seem to have ended up with no less than five RetroChallengers in the top three slots! Without further ado:
*1*
equant took first place with his Grackle68k twitter client for classic Macs.
*2*
A couple of intensive...
It's all over but the crying!
This year's RC was quite productive, with probably a dozen assorted programs written and quite a few creative/fun entries. If anyone would like to vote for their favourite challenges, head on over to the RetroBBS (account sign-up required) and email the SysOp with...
A few years ago I attached 7 DuoDisks to a IIe for fun... that's almost 2 megs of online storage! I think I used ProSel as a program launcher. It really worked quite well.
That's really the point... for those who want to limit their participation to 68K topics, some way of filtering a new message search would accomplish that without affecting anyone else.
Whether or not the Lounge (or any other sub forum) is important is up to the individual member.
Here's the thing: My mother-in-law has some old Windows software on floppy disk and a Toshiba laptop with no floppy drive... the only machines I have with floppy drives are 68K Macs. I assume that since I can read PC floppies, I can create disk images of them... the real question is, what...
Is it possible to (on a per-user basis) exclude the Lounge from showing up when you click "View new posts"? That would at least give the impression, for those who care, that the 68KMLA is still focused mostly on 68K Macs.
If you have an OS X box that lacks serial ports, you can get USB/8-pin serial adaptors pretty cheap. Then all you need is an 8-pin Mac printer cable to go between.
Not for MacOS... the free alternative would be to install some form of UNIX, but that's not exactly the easy way out ;-)
There's always the option of getting a dial-up shell account and getting online that way. You can get a free account at http://www.chebucto.ca. If you're in the US or...
