    Toshiba Portégé subnote

Any plans to try any of the lighter-weight Linuxes like DSL?

    Macintosh Portable

Yeah, I paid something like $500 for the privilege of owning a 2c FPD and I think within an hour or two, I had already yanked off the clear plastic lens which made it a bit worse. It was best in full sunlight but would quickly overheat, so this wasn't a very practical solution. I recall Zenith...

    Macintosh Portable

Seconded on the carry case, and I wouldn't mind having a set of manuals either.

    Macintosh Portable

Thanks! I lucked out a few years ago and got it for $25 from Mac Shack in Boulder and did a full restoration on it except for the space bar, which I will probably RetroBrite at some point.

    Macintosh Portable

I guess it was too much to hope that the voltage regulator could be replaced with an off-the-shelf 3-pin 5V or 12V regulator... My 5125 will probably need another battery rebuild but seems to otherwise be working fine. I think I should hook it up to a small solar trickle-charger so I can keep...

What's the story with the custom voltage regulators, and can an off-the-shelf part be substituted?

    Apple 14" AudioVision Monitor

I bought one of those monitors "back in the day" and I liked it too. The HDI45 connector was a bad idea for the 99% of the users who just wound up needing a clunky adapter, but for me, it was fine because it plugged right into my 6100. IIRC, larger Trinitrons were much more expensive, but when...

    Free iMac G5

All 4 have bulging/burst capacitors in the power supply, even the one that still powers up OK. This person suggests changing out all of the failure-prone parts, not just the one or two that are obviously shot: http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php

    Free iMac G5

Scored a working iMac G5 from my employer, but need to recap the power supply and motherboard before I dare to use it much. Got several others which aren't powering up at all, but don't know if recapping + new fuse would fix or not. All have bulging/leaking electrolytic capacitors on the...

    Outbound Notebook

What a great find! Does it contain a stock SE motherboard or something similar? Should be very rebuild-able. Have you tried powering it up without the main battery in place? It may be toast by now. Dunno if the AC brick can power up the machine unassisted though.

Mac 128K, BBS & The Internet?

Remember that in the The Olden Days, the heavy lifting (TCP/IP, mail clients, etc) were all done by the host system! Even after Apple officially supported TCP/IP with Open Transport in the System 7.5 era, it remained an OPTIONAL install for some time. Up until that time, you connected to the...

An OS X Question from Jack Thomas

Apple doesn't provide a control panel called "Security". He probably needs to uninstall or update whatever 3rd party software it's part of.

    Classic II restoration

'Fraid you have to count them yourself, because my two Classic II motherboards were significantly different from one another, and IIRC, the number of capacitors was a little bit different too. But both used 1, 10 and 47 uf. Think one used (3) 47s, (13) 10 uf and (2) 1 uf, and the other used a...

Mac Plus--good interior, and has had C1 replaced

Oxidation, nothing, that's corrosion, and it looks like something got spilled on the board. How can you tell that C1 has been replaced? Looks to me like the original factory hot glue is undisturbed. You may simply have a later revision of the analog board which incorporates improvements.
