Surprisingly, the answer is "maybe":

But even if the carts are good, is your printer salvageable?
Should be a piece of cake for most modern power banks + the right trigger (cheap, easy to implement). Modifying the power bank itself or bypassing it's output circuitry would be counterproductive. All you really need to create is a custom USB cable with Powerbook barrel connector on one end, an...
Fresh nicad batteries can still be had from sources like Digikey, and would save you the hassle of having to devise a new charge controller. Pretty sure these things are still being used in applications like electric toothbrushes and razors, which tend to be left charging continuously.
Don't make the mistake that I did when I tried to power a portable record player from USB power bank: I got an inexpensive DC-DC converter to step up the 5 volt output to 12 volts. Which it did, but the power bank output was still limited to 5V @ 1A, and the power bank would keep cutting out...

In the past, I've been able to get away with leaving the DIN8 side alone and making any necessary changes on the DB25 side which is lots easier to solder. IIRC, the DTR (Data Terminal Ready)...
Check the wiring configuration of your serial cable. Not sure what the IW1's requirements are, but most DIN-8 -> DB25 cables that I've encountered were designed for lower-speed modems, and they omit the connections for hardware handshaking. Can't recall if it was RTS/CTS and/or DTR pins. "Back...
Blown fuse? Always a good first thing to check.
Double-check your work: When doing restorations, I'll often remove/replace just one value of part at a time, and I'll take care to ensure that the # of parts removed and the # of parts installed is always the same. It's basic stuff, but it really...
Power supply may still be weak despite seemingly okay voltage readings, and the fact that the screen is dim and that the system seems to work better when you unplug current-hungry devices like SCSI and floppy drives is "interesting".
Yes, but if you can type characters from one machine to the other, then something is already acting as null modem adapter because if that weren't the case, you wouldn't be able to send even that across.
Also, IIRC standard ImageWriter II mini DIN-8 cables are already wired as null-modem.
This sounds really familiar, and I think your problem is maybe with the Mini DIN-8 -> DB25 cable. When higher speed modems became popular, a revised Mini DIN-8 - DB25 cable with support for hardware handshaking became necessary, but even in the 1990s, there were lots of the older-style cables...
If they did, I never heard of it. I was under the impression that PCMCIA didn't make an appearance on Mac until the Powerbook 5xx series, and even then it was a halfhearted effort.
To the best of my knowledge, that slot wasn't used for anything besides a modem. Ethernet for Duos was typically implemented as some sort of mini-dock device.
Maybe remove the LCD and just use the backlight + diffuser? Hopefully illumination is pretty even. My old 24" iMac had brightness which was about 1 stop brighter on one side of the panel than the other!
If you're only working with black and white, even something like this inexpensive panel...
I had a few CD-RWs become unreadable after a number of years, was under the impression these weren't designed to be particularly archival. And as mentioned, not all older drives can read them. Buy a couple of CD-RW disks and try it out?
FWIW I paid around $2300 for a PB100 w/floppy in 1/20 configuration on launch day or pretty close to it. Basically a modernized Mac Portable built for Apple by Sony. Got a ton of use out of it, and by the time I sold it, the case plastics had been repaired a number of times. Had to drill out the...
I have not seen an Outbound in person since they were current models. Ironically I could walk to their old location from my current apartment. But businesses come and go so frequently in Boulder that I doubt there would be any traces of Outbound left to see today.
