    II's are still useful...

When I was that age, I was using those same setups in the computer lab at school (my class was one of the last to enter the educational system before Apple IIs went away). I have a IIe and a IIGS today, but unfortunately I'm at a loss as to what to use them for, so they generally just sit on...

Installing Classic OS 9 apps under OSX 10.4

Doesn't that display only run at 1680x1050? What about it requires OS X 10.2 to run? I've definitely used Mac OS 9 at that resolution before. What would prevent you from using it with an Intel Mac? If there is actually something about this display that makes it compatible only with a narrow...

For those that need USB 2.0 in their G4 Tower...

The USB 2.0 card I put in my MDD G4 is a blue Belkin 5-port card (four external and one internal); I wonder if it's the same one. It has never caused any problems for me, but I understand PCI card stuff with Macs tends to be situational. I remember at the time I got it (2004) Mac forums and...

Installing Classic OS 9 apps under OSX 10.4

I'm going to take this opportunity to say that Classic Mode was really not great and should not be relied upon. It usually didn't fail on me the few times I tried it, but it's conceptually messy and compatibility isn't perfect. I suspect Classic Mode was primarily targeted at home users who had...

What to do with a Power Mac G5?

I mentioned the BSDs specifically just to relate the story of 32-bit SPARC machines being supported by them long after Sun stopped doing so. There was no intention of suggesting that Linux would not work equally well, nor was any Linux vs. BSD partisanship involved. I use the term "generic UNIX"...

What to do with a Power Mac G5?

Another thing to be said for running *BSD on your G5 instead of Mac OS X is that you'll be getting a current OS with security updates and a high likelihood of continued support moving forward. A similar situation this reminds me of is in Sun hardware, which switched from the 32-bit sun4m...

What to do with a Power Mac G5?

Remember that Photoshop only ran in OS X starting with version 7, if you're going to set out to acquire a copy.

What to do with a Power Mac G5?

Where to begin? First off, "68kMLA" by definition is a place where people who like 68K Macs and maybe also some other kinds of computers congregate. It is not a place where people have to avoid using newer hardware or are obligated to be some kind of computing ascetic, denying themselves any...

840av ports and where to get video ram?

I've been through a fair bit of 840AV logic board drama myself. They are touchy, but getting the capacitors replaced seems to resolve most issues. As for keeping S-Video and ADB sorted out... just remember that ADB is all the way on the bottom and your S-VIdeo ports flank the display connector...

Thinking of buying a Dell 3350 or the like for Ubuntu

Gorgonops: Are you trying to be clever? Anyway, I'm now thinking about buying a PC laptop, which I haven't done before. Apple's offerings are very nice, but for $300 less than their 1.6 GHz entry level I can get a 2.4GHz i5, and I'm comfortable with not-OS X. The only catch is that driver...

Thinking of buying a Dell 3350 or the like for Ubuntu

It's not a full-blown desktop environment like Étoilé, but I've been doing a bit of experimentation with Window Maker lately. I stumbled upon it years ago and liked it, but I was mostly using Macs back then and didn't pay it much attention. Now that I'm on "proper" UNIX most of the time, I'm...

    MS Office/Word 98

I've thought about getting into TeX at some point, but I have too many other projects going on to try learning something else right now, and to be honest I don't compose enough, or complex enough, documents to justify it. Just had to throw out that I'm not opposed to the idea. For the past...

    Click-and-hold for context menu?

FinderPop can probably do it. I know you can at least set it to load a "Contents" contextual menu with click-and-hold, and I think you can also set it to bring up the regular menu with the same behavior. I mostly use System 7 and not OS 8/9 these days, so I'm not 100%. Also, if you like BeOS's...

Current State of Mac OS 9 Instant Messaging Clients

I used to use AIMM, which was a very clean and simple AIM client for PPC 7.6-9.2, but it relies on TOC (which AOL has discontinued). The AOL client is disgusting and I imagine anything from Microsoft or Yahoo would be the same, so currently I'm not aware of any decent working clients. Of course...

    conquest - DENIED!

Why would you spend a day off the computer if you were expecting a reply from someone about a purchase, anyway? Lowballing or not.

    Dining room Classic

I'm in the process of acquiring an SE/30 to use as a living room computer for ssh and maybe some light writing. If that's your thing, you could network the Classic and go for that. A cocktail recipe catalog is an interesting idea. I'm going to think about adding that to my own plans, although I...

    My ultimate MDD project

No need to limit MDDs to 10.4; they can handle 10.5 just as well. It's good to see more people around with this mindset. Those who throw away their old computers only to complain about what they've lost down the road seem to be increasing in number (at least on the Internet), and the more I see...

    My ultimate MDD project

They were made almost specifically for that when new; why would they suddenly not be good for it? Also, reread your post while thinking about what kind of community you're in. - From someone who has used the same MDD for over six years with no plans of changing that anytime soon.

    Scored a Perfect iMac G4 800MHZ

As much as I can't stand iMacs and all-in-ones in general, I love the adjustable-arm display on those things. I had to rebuild one at work the other week and only reluctantly sent it back because I enjoyed playing with the monitor so much.
