You have to keep your eye out, but it only took about a month of looking before I saw this PB1400 on eBay. It didn't have the highly desirable higher-end Sonnet accelerator, but just going to G3 is pretty good in and of itself in terms of one of these older machines--as large a jump as 386 to...
I have a WaveLan Gold PCMCIA card, and a Global Village 56K Modem/Ethernet card (no dongle however). The optional external video card only puts out 800x600, so I am kinda meh on chasing that down...though I believe that Wegener Media has the video card for about $30 if you want one.
What I am...
A few more observations...
The NuTech card is a PPC G3 version, which I am guessing makes the 83 MhZ difference even more pronounced in terms of performance over my original PB1400c/166.
PB1400c/166 603e 32MB RAM with spinning platter 2GB hard drive vs. PB1400c/166 603e 64MB RAM with 2GB CF...
I got a 1400c today in the mail. I popped it open, and after the obligatory fire it up and see what's on it (OS9.1, Photoshop 4, some other stuff) I got out the windex wipes and the compressed air and the screwdrivers and got to work field stripping it.
When I got the keyboard up and saw the...
Picked up a PB1400, 64MB with a 250MHz NuTech accelerator--equipment was in pretty good shape. It is running 9.1 right now and I am in the middle of reconfiguring it with a CF card. Details down in the PPC Forum.
Best,
John
Anyone run across any software that runs in OS8.6 that can manipulate an mp3 file, say, change the sample rate? I have an older mac I am doing some mpegdec testing on and want to get the sample rate down to less than 128kbps.
Best,
John
Fiddled around a bit tonight with the iici.
Got the Radius DSP extension and put it in the folder. Photoshop is on the way, so I will see soon how that all goes.
I dorked around with various versions of system 7. It appears that the Powercache control panel doesn't like 7.6.1. Didn't like...
I was kinda impressed at how small the innards were. Most of the insides were taken up by battery bay, hard drive and floppy. The logic board is sorta scrunched up over in the back left corner, with the modem and SCSI parts lining a strip along the back. The RAM is on a weird card that lay...
I took apart the pair of 180s I have and pushed the best parts (the 240MB hard drive and 8MB of RAM) over to the better looking machine in preparation for it being sent as a nostalgia bomb to an old friend of mine. Interestingly, one of them was running 7.1 and the other 7.5.5. Booted up fine...
I received a Radius Photoengine Card, a NIB Kensington Turbo Mouse, and another 16MB of RAM for the IIci. I have a copy of Photoshop 3.0 on the way, so I'll give it a try and see how it goes. I need to track down the Radius DSP extension and the PhotoEngine Plugin for Photoshop.
I also got a...
That's good action, there. I have a circa 2005 30GB iPOD that I replaced the battery in, and then like an idiot let drop to no charge and sit there, so I'll be doing that again sometime. These little machines have good longevity--mine went to Iraq with me twice and until the battery gave out...
I have no idea what manner of hard drives my 180s have, I ought to do a field strip sometime this weekend and get a look. By all means please let me know what you think of the BTIs, as I will probably get a set of spares. One of my batteries has got a tear in the front where it meets with the...
Just as a quick question to the original poster, did you do anything special with the encryption, for example did you go 64-bit or 128-bit WEP?
Best,
John
If I find someone who sells them, I'll be glad to post my results here. Thanks much for the advice--sounds very much like hit and miss, but even if it doesn't work I'd have the parts for repair.
Best,
John
Yeah, that's what I 've come to an awareness of--that the things that I was wanting faster were functions of hard drive seek and access time, not CPU speed. Cool.
Best,
John
Here's a question: If I roll the dice and get another 1400c for the purposes of cannibalising its RAM to add to the one I have that is sitting at 32MB, will that work? I've read that sometimes stacking memory of different brands = no worky.
Best,
John
Good deal. I have been on boards where strict moderation was the rule, so being new I didn't want to run afoul of the practices. The core of my little squad of rescue-Macs is my pais of IIcis, so a lot of my comments might be here in this forum.
I'll take a look at that recommended software...
