He's referring to a SuperDrive, which is a floppy drive that can read and write 400k/800k/1.4M floppies. The original SE isn't able to read or write 1.4M floppies unless you install both a SuperDrive and the necessary ROMs.
There are 3 or 4 hex screws on the back that need to be removed to get the power supply out. High pitched whining could be the hard drive. If you have a CD installer for OS 9 or OS X up to 10.4, you may try booting the installer and seeing if your mouse works normally. If it does, that would...
I don't think the SE board is plagued with capacitor issues like the SE/30, Classic, Classic II, etc. However, I wonder if the analog board is susceptible to cold solder joints. Beyond reseating ICs, I would look for any obvious damage on the logic board. Cold solder joints on the analog board...
Nice find. They're cool machines. I bit the bullet and bought a matching CRT. Keep a lookout on eBay for CPU upgrades. I managed to grab a 500 MHz upgrade for around $50.
My guess would be a bad mouse, or incompatibility with the random mouse you chose to use. You can try to lubricate the fan, or replace it. I think they are of the 120mm variety. I bet if you remove the fan and hit it with some 3-in-1 oil, it'll shut up for a while.
Can you provide a photo of the connector you're referring to? I've disassembled a couple of iMac G4s to make lamps, and I want to say that each connector on the logic board simply pulled straight up. I really don't want to give you bad information, though.
I have a power supply and logic board from one that I'm turning into a lamp. I think it's a 700 MHz model, but will have to confirm. Not sure if they're any good, but if you're in the US, you can have them for the cost of shipping.
Thanks for the tip. I had a bear of a time trying to remove those axials, too. How long would you suggest preheating the board for? I'm always nervous I'll cause damage.
This guy will create and send you boot floppies for a fee. Double density 800k disks are relatively expensive which makes me reluctant to give away what few I have.
The drive won't eject when the button is pressed, nor will it eject when dragging a disk to the trash. When I try the drag to trash method, the GS/OS appears to unmount the disk, but the disk drive will still show disk activity (light cycles on for a few seconds, then off, then back on), and the...
I didn't do anything with my SE/30's analog board, but I'm not sure if it's a low-hour machine. What attention should we give the analog board? Just checking for cold solder joints?
I actually ran into this yesterday. I did as you said: reformatted the SD card, then copied the data back onto the card. I have mounted the SD card under Windows 10, OS X Tiger, and OS 9. I notice OS 9 adds a Resource Fork directory and Windows adds System Volume Information. I'm going to have...
