    CRT Hairline Scratches

How does this affect the viewed image? Since this is monochrome, it shouldn't be nearly as bad as color, where you get rainbow effects (tip for cleaning color screens of any type: wipe diagonally, so any accidental scratches aren't parallel to sub-pixels. For Trinitron CRTs, you can wipe...

    Stuffit 7 Question

I assume you make the archive, then select Translate->Segment. Or use the DropSegment app.

    Where are all the programmers?

Stuffit Expander 5 works fine onFutureBASICII.sea (I just tried). I found a page about using version 5 on older versions of Mac OS.

    Sonnet Crescendo Performance Decrease?

Wow, 55 C? My Sonnet G3/400 PCI card barely gets above room temperature in my 8500 (around 28 C maximum). I know they used copper-based G3 chips in some boards, to reduce temperature.

    Font Smoothing on System 7?

I've tried sub-pixel rendering and didn't like it. For some reason I prefer OS 9's grayscale anti-aliasing, even over Ubuntu 10.04's. LCD is locked onto the signal properly too in all cases, with 1:1 pixel mapping.

    Refound Conquest: StyleWriter II

The biggest drawback with injkets is the wasted ink every time you turn them on/off, and drying between prints. If you don't print very often, it drives the cost per page way up, and you still get problems with clogged print heads. And let's not get into the printers refusing to print black...

    Font Smoothing on System 7?

font smoothing "system 7" finds SmoothType, which works with System 7.

    Refound Conquest: StyleWriter II

Good luck on that. I've sworn off inkjets (gave away several StyleWriters a few months ago).

    gif to macpaint

Maybe it uses the "startup screen" format? I'm pretty sure GIF Converter saves in that.

    Classilla 9.2.1

OK, I found a hack that works. First, open the window and add file://foo, which it allows (it doesn't allow file: or file:///). Then quit Classilla, edit prefs.js, and remove the foo, leaving you with user_pref("capability.policy.maonoscript.sites", "sbg: about: about:blank chrome: file://")...

    Classilla 9.2.1

Finally giving this a try. How do I allow execution of JavaScript on local files? It won't let me add file:/// to the list. Classilla 9.1 always allowed execution of local JavaScript.

    Reviving tired mouse microswitch

I've revived the microswitch in several of my ADB mice without having to replace it. Getting the same replacement can be hard, as the click force should be matched, and of course the shape of the switch must match. The modification involves a slight rewiring and a resistor, so that the normally...

Macintosh Computers, Software and Accessories. Oh my!

It's good to remove batteries from anything being stored for more than a few months. Unfortunately you can't (easily) remove electrolytic capacitors, which also leak and destroy things, like Mac IIsi computers :(

PDS Apple IIe card worth anything?

Ahhh, that's the cable I saw a couple of days ago at Goodwill Computer Works (in Austin). I thought it was for connecting two monitors or something.

No, this only works on Macs with the same video chip as the 8500.

    Power Mac 9500 startup woes

Because the extension improves performance greatly, enabling all the optimizations available. When I boot with my Sonnet G3 400 MHz in an 8500 without any extensions, everything runs really slowly. I imagine it powers up with speculative execution off, the 2MB cache off, etc., for maximum...

    Installing RAM in a 8500

And here I read your post several days ago, thinking "I don't cut myself anymore on my 8500". I had it open yesterday when installing a video card, and after closing it, my thumb hurt. I figured it was just the pressing I was doing. I look over and it's bleeding! So add another victim.

    Installing RAM in a 8500

Whoops, you're right; I meant an 8600. I get that and the 9500/9600 confused a lot. Even then, the 8600's logic board is a slightly different shape, and some of the connectors go a different direction, so you couldn't literally put it inside an 8500 case. I also had a 7600 for a while, and too...
