For instance as a test with the dodgy lot I recapped the 8 caps of a bad LCD (PB 100 with the reddish spiderweb syndrome) which now shows an horizontal line.
Another Mac liberated! Incidentally, is it possible that a whole lot of cheap caps is bad? The same lot that I used for a Mac Classic and also at that time I had to recap everything.
I investigaed further: it's not molds, but gas. It's the so-called «vinegar syndrome". I checked all my collection and also a B/W PB 5300, stored not far from the 180c, is affected. Luckily all other stuff (see signature) so far is fine.
Check here for more info on the vinegar syndrome:
I know the passive matrix LCD of that era are not uniform, but this one seems to suffer from uneven backlight.
Shall I take it apart or should I be fine with the contrast setting?
The photos show the contrast at minimum, maximum and the best setting I can get:
After some years of storage I decided to fix some dead PBs. This one has developer a very aggressive mold that has damaged the front plastic of the LCD. This one was my 3rd PB180 (for spares, especially the LDC): very sad though.
Now I am recapping another logic board, this time the right way: desolder, clean with isopropyl alcohol, dishwasher, dry thoroughly (a week or two), recap. Yes, I know thet there is a capacitor in the processor board.
Thank you for the replies. I was wondering if those heavy and strong hoses are really needed, given that the liquid doesn't get hot and there's no pressure build up. From the reply it seems that they are not required.
Will keep you posted.
I am fixing some spares LCSs to try fix a PM G5 2.7 x2.
I managed to create an expansion vase with some laboratory stuff (see video) and I was wondering if the pressure inside the system can actually reach high values.
In a car engine the water can reach temperatures way above 100°C snd the...
So far I have recapped the whole logic board but still get the dark blue screen on boot: tomorrow will recap the LCD. I have read that sometimes the complete recap does not solve.
I am replacing the caps to this PB 100 motherboard and want to see if I can sort out the known dark screen syndrome. Is there any way to power-up this thing without reconnecting any time the keyboard?
Usually in the logic boards there are two small contacts to short for the machine to power up...
After the recapping a working logic board stopped working (the Classic checkered pattern without ram expansion, horizontal lines with expansion ram installed). Used dirty cheap caps. Recapped with better quality caps and everything is fine.
So beware of caps quality!
thank you, your thought confirmed my intuition. will try this logic boand on a fully recapped analog from another Mac that I liberated a couple of months ago, and let you know.
So I am trying to liberate this Mac Classic. Analog is good (fine with another good logic), logic recapped: I got the chime but then dark screen and it reboots in a loop: chime --> dark screen --> reboot --> chime --> dark screen.
What to check then?
